Steam Summer Internship Program



During the summer of 2016, the New York City Department of Design and Construction (DDC), in partnership with the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (NYC DYCD), will offer a summer internship program for forty talented NYC high school students to work full-time, in-house, at DDC.

The High School Summer Internship Program is designed for students interested in pursuing careers in architecture, engineering, building trades, public administration, business administration or information technology. The program is structured to enable students to gain exposure to the many careers in the built environment and to learn about what it takes to build New York City. It is a unique opportunity to prepare students for the growing demands of the job market.

Assignments may include AutoCAD (computer-aided design) drafting for students interested in architecture or engineering, Internet research, word processing, spreadsheet creation, and other clerical work. Students work for six weeks, five days a week, in a program that combines hands-on work and educational programming.

APPLICATION PROCESS

You are required to submit the following as part of your completed application: 
  • DDC High School Summer Internship application 
  • Letter of recommendation 
  • Current resume 
  • School transcript (SYEP Applicants Only) 
  • DYCD Ladders for Leaders and/or Summer Youth Employment Program Application 

STEP 1: 
Submit your completed DDC High School Summer Internship Program application online by April 15, 2016. Please choose one of the following options to submit your application. If you encounter any difficulties, please call us at (718) 391-2888 for assistance. 

ONLINE SUBMISSION: 
  1. Fill out and submit your information using our Google form
  2. All supporting documents should be emailed to STEAM@ddc.nyc.gov with the subject heading: “2016 HSSIP – [FIRST NAME LAST NAME]”

  1. Right click and save our PDF application. Open the PDF using Adobe Reader. Fill in your information electronically and submit the application by clicking on the 'Submit Form' button on the upper right hand corner.

STEP 2:
Based upon your grade average, please complete the appropriate DYCD application: 
  • If your grade average is 80 and above, please complete the NYC DYCD Ladders for Leaders application (due April 4, 2016).
  • If your grade average is below 80, please complete the NYC DYCD Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) application (due April 4, 2016). This year our partnering community provider is HANAC Community located at 23-16 30th Avenue, Astoria, NY 11102. Please select them as a provider if you are interested in this internship opportunity. 

After March 1st, all applicants must fill out both SYEP and Ladders for Leaders applications, regardless of grade average. 

STEP 3:
If selected, you will receive notification for an interview by Wednesday April 20th, 2016 via email. Interviews will take place during the week of April 25th, 2016 unless your application is selected via the SYEP Lottery system. If your application is selected via the SYEP lottery system, interviews will be on a rolling basis. 

Incomplete packages will not be considered, both NYC Department of Design and Construction and Department of Youth and Community Development applications must be completed.

It's back-to-school and that means our fall workshops are about to begin. Registration is now open for the following writing-based classes:
  • The Young Superheroes Guide to NYC, for ages 9-12

Due to a high volume of interest in our workshops program, students are admitted on a lottery basis. This fall, the lottery will be drawn on September 15. Teen Night Planning Committee at the Brooklyn Museum

The Teen Night Planning Committee is an internship opportunity for teens interested in learning more about the ins and outs of event planning in the arts. The Teen Night Planning Committee designs, promotes, and facilitates special Teen Nights at the Museum. Members of the Committee have the opportunity to:
  • Select local teen performers and artists for Teen Night events
  • Invite teens to take part in Teen Night activities
  • Learn how to network and promote special events
  • Develop organization and event-planning skills
  • Collaborate with peers to gain communication skills
The Teen Night Planning Committee internship is open to all high school students and runs from November to May. Meetings are held two or three Wednesdays a month from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Teen Night events are held on the second Friday of the month in February, March, April, and May. Upon acceptance to the program, participants must commit to working for seven months and are required to attend all meetings and work days. Summer Internship Program at the Apollo Theater

SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The Apollo Theater Academy Summer Internship Program provides high school students preparing to enter their senior year with opportunities for professional and personal development as they explore administrative and managerial careers in the performing arts and entertainment industries.

Summer Interns learn about non-performance careers and what takes place behind-the-scenes at the Apollo Theater.
THIS INTERNSHIP WILL NOT TEACH YOU HOW TO BE A PERFORMER.
Interns are assigned to work alongside staff members of the Apollo Theater for six weeks in various departments such as Programming, Marketing & Public Relations, Community Outreach, and Events Management.
 
YOU SHOULD APPLY TO THE SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM IF YOU…
  • have a serious interest in learning about careers behind-the-scenes in the performing arts and entertainment industries.
  • will be entering the 12th grade in September 2011.
  • enjoy working on projects as part of a team.
  • will be available to attend the entire program, Monday – Friday, July 5 through August 12, 2011.
GUIDELINES
  • Interns receive a small weekly stipend and are responsible for their own meals and transportation. Interns work Monday through Friday, early July through mid August. Each workday consists of 7 hours.
  • If selected, interns must commit to attending the entire program and orientation sessions.
  • The Summer Internship Program is open to rising high school seniors. Students who will be entering the 12th grade in September 2011 are qualified to apply and must obtain a:
    • Valid school ID card with a photograph
    • Recent school schedule and most recent report card or transcript
    • If selected, a valid New York State Employment Certificate (working papers) and a valid Social Security Card must be submitted prior to the start of the program.
  • Applications are due Friday, May 20, 2011.
  • The application process is highly competitive; therefore, not everyone who applies will be selected to participate. Relatives of Apollo Theater Foundation employees are not eligible to apply.

Get in the Game: Learn How To Be a Player in the Real World

Community Board 14 is hosting its 4th Annual Youth Conference on Thursday, April 28, from 4 to 7pm at the Brooklyn College Student Center (East 27th Street and Campus Road).
Many City agencies, local businesses, and organizations are participating in this year’s conference, whose theme is “Get in the Game: Learn How To Be a Player in the Real World,” to help provide teenagers between the ages of 12 and 19 with job, internship, and volunteer opportunities as well as after-school and summer activities. Breakout sessions and workshops will also be conducted.

NY Historical Society Internship



Summer 2011 Student Historians
The New-York Historical Society is currently accepting applications for the Summer 2011 Student Historian Internship program. Applicants must be available to intern Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 AM to 4:45 PM for the entire length of the program, which runs from Tuesday, July 5 to Thursday, August 11. Applications are due by 5 PM on Friday, April 29.
Application Information
The New-York Historical Society high school internship program is open to students who meet ALL of the following qualifications:
  • You are enrolled in a high school in grades 10, 11, or 12 in the tri-state area.
  • You have the consent of your parent/guardian to apply for this program.
  • You have (or can obtain by the start of the program) valid working papers. For complete information about obtaining working papers, visit http://www.labor.state.ny.us/workerprotection/laborstandards/workprot/wphmpg.shtm.
  • AND you have all documents necessary to be employed in the United States for the duration of the internship (applicants are responsible for the cost of procuring any documentation related to seeking employment in the United States).

One recommender must be a teacher; the other may be a second teacher or another adult outside of your family who knows you well (supervisor, mentor, etc.).

Applications that do not follow instructions or that are incomplete as of 5 PM on Friday, April 29 will not be accepted. If you do not have a computer at home, please plan ahead to use one at school or at your local public library. NYC Ladders for Leaders is an innovative program that offers high school and college students the opportunity to participate in summer internships with some of the most dynamic corporations and businesses in New York City. Participants receive pre-employment training before starting their seven-week summer internships, and also attend regular workshops throughout the summer that focus on work readiness, college orientation, health, and leadership development. NYC Ladders for Leaders is a partnership between DYCD and the Commission on Women's Issues.

hat is NYC Ladders for Leaders?
NYC Ladders for Leaders is a college and career readiness program offering New York City high school and college students professional paid summer internships, college scholarship opportunities, free college preparatory and SAT courses, career guidance, and leadership development workshops.
Launched by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, NYC Ladders for Leaders is a joint program of the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) and the NYC Commission on Women’s Issues (CWI).
Who can apply?
Anyone with prior work experience (paid or volunteer) who is:
  • A permanent resident of one of the five boroughs of New York City
  • 16 to 21 years of age
  • A current high school junior, high school senior, college freshman, or college sophomore
  • Legally allowed to work in New York
Please Note: Alumni of the NYC Ladders for Leaders program (or its parent programs NYC GirlsREACH and BoysREACH and CAPITAL) are not eligible to apply for the 2011 program.
What is the application process?
There are three phases to the application process.
1. Application
2. Pre-Employment workshops and mock-interviews
3. Interviews with Potential Employers
Participants selected into the program must complete each of the three phases. Failure to complete or attend mandatory program events will result in dismissal from the program.
How do I apply?
Applicants must:
1. Complete all sections of the online application form. This includes:
  • Responding to each mandatory essay question in the corresponding text box;
  • Providing your resume in the appropriate text box. Resume should include any of your previous and current jobs, internships, leadership roles, volunteer commitments, extracurricular activities, and club involvement;
  • Agreeing to the NYC Ladders for Leaders guidelines (if under 18, must be agreed to and signed by a parent or guardian as well);
  • Listing your official scores from any college entrance exams you have taken (such as PSAT, SAT, SAT subject tests, or ACT);
  • Listing a valid email address that you check frequently. If you do not have an email address, you can create a free email account at various web hosts including but not limited to www.yahoo.com; www.hotmail.com; www.aol.com; www.gmail.com; etc. (Note – all program communication, including invitations to mandatory program events, will be sent by email only); and
  • If you attend Boarding School or College/University located outside of NYC, providing a copy of your School Calendar (including winter and spring breaks, last day of classes and last day of final exams).
2. Mail a copy of your most recent semester report card or college transcript. If you are a college freshman, please mail your last high school report card along with proof of college enrollment (i.e. class schedule) to below address.

What happens after I submit my application?
All applications will be reviewed for eligibility. Please keep in mind that submission of an application does not guarantee acceptance into the NYC Ladders for Leaders program or placement in a summer internship position.

The New York Aquarium Teen Conservation Program

PROGRAM TITLE: Careers in Aquatic Research and Education (CARE)

Program Description
The New York Aquarium Teen Conservation Program’s Careers in Aquatic Research and Education (CARE) is a unique winter opportunity designed to introduce early high school students from various backgrounds and occupational interests to the vast and interdisciplinary nature of careers in the aquatic sciences and related fields, with a focus on careers options at living institutions such as the New York Aquarium. Interns will participate in a 10-day program where they will learn about the multi-faceted discipline of aquatic science and have the opportunity to interact with experts in various disciplines. While exposure to career opportunities in aquatic science and related fields will be the focus of the CARE program, participants will be involved also in several skill-building activities in order to prepare them for the career choices ahead. Activities will include, but will not be limited to: public speaking, bibliography generation, field observation and recording, basic research strategies, and presentation creation.
This is an unpaid internship program.
Program Requirements
CARE interns must commit to participating in this 50-hour program, which will take place over the course of 10 days (Saturdays and a few weekdays) from January 8, 2011 to March 5th, 2011. The CARE Program will begin each day at 10am and end at 4pm on the following days:

Application and Selection Process
Eligibility: Potential applicants must be…
  • Between the ages of 14 and 17 by Friday January 7th, 2011
  • Enrolled in a DOE high school as of September 2010
  • In their freshman (9th grade), sophomore (10th grade), or junior (11th grade) year in high school
  • Application Criteria: Interested students must submit a completed application package to the New York Aquarium’s Education Department by e-mail at NYAregisrar@wcs.org or by faxing the application to 718-265-3451 no later than 4:00pm (Eastern Standard Time) on Friday, November 19, 2010. Late or incomplete application packages will not be reviewed or considered.
A completed application package must include:
  • A filled-in CARE Application Form (signatures by the applicant and the applicants’ parent or guardian is required)
  • A short 300-word typed an double-spaced essay describing your interest in the program (read the application form for details)
Interview and Selection: The Teen Conservation Program Selection Committee will review submitted applications that are complete and received by the deadline date. All applications will be equally considered. Selection of candidates into the CARE program will be based on the strength of the candidate’s application and his or her in-person interview.
Candidates selected from the pool of applicants will be placed on a roster and contacted for an in-person interview at the New York Aquarium. Candidates not selected for the roster will be notified by mail. One 1- hour interview will be scheduled for each candidate over the course of 7 days between Sunday November 21st and Sunday December 19th, 2010. Interviews will occur between the hours of 2:00pm and 5:00pm Sundays through Thursdays. Following the interview, finalists will be notified by e-mail that they have been accepted as CARE interns by Thursday December 23rd, 2010. Prospective CARE interns must notify the New York Aquarium Education Department of their intent to participate in the program no later than 4:00pm (Eastern Standard Time) on Wednesday, December 29th, 2010.

Introduction
Today's Teens, Tomorrow's Techies (T4)Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) is committed to serving the needs of the diverse people of Brooklyn. We are equally committed to providing quality learning experiences for young people. BPL is now recruiting energetic, high performing high school students from diverse backgrounds with an interest in library careers to apply for an innovative, hands-on internship program.

What You'll Do
  • Complete 30-50 hours of training and field trips focused on public service, electronic databases, community outreach, archives and special collections.

  • Provide tech support for seniors and English Language Learners on our public computers.
  • Assist with language interpretation and translation as needed.

  • Represent BPL by reaching out to diverse communities to engage new Americans in the library.

Requirements
  • Enrolled in high school
  • Available 8-10 hours a week out of school time from November through June
  • Moderate to high level of English fluency (second language other than English preferred)
  • Multicultural background or experience (either working with or being part of the diverse ethnic and immigrant communities that make up Brooklyn)
  • Signed consent of parents to engage in 200 hours of intern service during out-of-school time
