Student Photography Contest

H and B Digital, a camera store in Midtown, is hosting a photography contest this summer called “The City Through Your Eyes,” open to New York City students 14-21 years of age.  The contest has been created as an opportunity for students to capture their surroundings and communicate just what living in New York City is all about.The contest starts now and runs through the end of September.  Students are asked to submit one photograph to H and B Digital by September 30th.

All submissions must be in the form of an 8×10-inch print, and must have been taken with a camera.  Photographs taken with a cell phone will not be considered.  Submissions should be mailed or hand delivered to the following address:

The contest will be judged by a panel of professional photographers who live and work in New York City. There will be 10 winners of the contest.  One Grand Prize Winner will receive a Canon Rebel T5i kit with an 18-55mm lens (retail value $849).  One Second Place and one Third Place winner will each receive a Canon Rebel T5 kit with an 18-55mm lens (retail value $549).  Seven runners-up will each receive a Canon PowerShot Elph camera.  All winners will also receive a certificate of excellence for participating in the contest. H and B Digital  is also scheduling a photographic show at the end of the competition to display many of the photographs which will be open to the public so we can all see “The City Through Your Eyes.” The brainchild of Hershel and Benjamin, two brothers who own H and B Digital, the contest endeavors to reveal the best student photographers in New York City today.  Through its stringent submission guidelines, “The City Through Your Eyes” seeks to elevate the most passionate and dedicated youth photographers, and to nurture their talents.

In order to apply for Summer Arts Institute, students must meet the following criteria:
1. Entering grades 8, 9, 10, 11, or 12 in the Fall of 2012
2. Currently enrolled in a New York City Department of Education public school or planning to enroll in a New York City Department of Education public school for the 2012-13 school year. Public school enrollment will be verified to determine eligibility.
  The 2012 Summer Arts Institute will be held at Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in Astoria, Queens, from July 9 through August 3, with the film studio extending through August 17.

Auditions will be held Saturday, March 24 and Sunday, March 25 at Frank Sinatra School of the Arts.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW 

The Summer Arts Institute is a tuition-free, intensive, four-week arts program for New York City public school students entering grades 8-12, held at Frank Sinatra School of the Arts High School in Astoria, Queens.

Students can major in dance, theater, instrumental music (band), vocal music, film, photography or visual arts. The program is designed for students at an intermediate or advanced level of study in their chosen discipline.

Summer Arts Institute offers a unique opportunity for students to work with Department of Education arts specialists, partnering cultural organizations, and guest artists. This experienced team of arts professionals guides students in building a portfolio or audition skills for their next level of study: an arts-focused high school, college, university or conservatory.

Summer Arts Institute focuses on three areas:
- developing students' artistic skills and creativity;
- broadening students' awareness of the arts and;
- helping students recognize and explore career options in the art and arts-related industries.

This intensive summer arts experience connects students to community and cultural resources along with access to careers and lifelong learning in the arts.

The daily schedule includes studio work and experiences with professional artists, both on and off-site. In the studios, students develop and improve their technical skills and creative expression in their selected art form. Time is dedicated to rehearsals, attending professional performances, visiting professional arts venues and exploring potential careers. Students are given opportunities to perform in selected venues around New York City, and to show their original work in an informal, cabaret-like setting called the SAI Café. The Institute culminates with an exhibition and live performance for families and the local community showcasing the students’ work from all studios.

Students who complete the program in good standing are eligible to receive a 1/2 unit of credit that may be applied towards an elective arts credit or a Regents or local diploma-major sequence upon approval from their school.

Our cultural partners are American Ballet Theatre (Dance), Roundabout Theatre Company (Theater),Theatre for a New Audience (Theater) and Tribeca Film Institute (Film). Young Audiences New York will provide guest artists in a variety of disciplines throughout the Institute.

The Whitney Museum of American Art is thrilled to announce… PHOTOGRAPHY EN ROUTE An Online Teen Photography Contest Inspired by Lee Friedlander: America By Car  Master American photographer Lee Friedlander spent a decade exploring the United States in ordinary rental cars, capturing the unique American landscape in a fascinating series of photographs on view at the Whitney in the exhibition America By Car . Now, Youth Insights Leaders invite you to share your own photographs of America, taken from any form of transportation—car, subway, bus, boat, bicycle, you name it! The Photography En Route contest is open to teens ages 13-19 anywhere in the United States.  Submit your best shot by November 27, 2010 to be eligible to win a brand new Nikon Coolpix L110 digital camera and to have your photograph featured on the Whitney’s website. Summer Arts Institute -- 2010

ANNOUNCING THE 2010 SUMMER ARTS INSTITUTE!

This summer the program will take place at Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in Astoria, Queens from July 6 through July 30, 2010. The film studio will extend through August 13, 2010.

Admission to the Summer Arts Institute is by application and audition. Applications must be received by Friday, February 26 at 5:00 p.m. Auditions will be held on Saturday, April 10 and Sunday, April 11, 2010 at Frank Sinatra School of the Arts.

Summer Arts Institute is open to all New York City Department of Education public school students entering grades 8 through 12 in the Fall of 2010. Only students currently enrolled or planning to attend a New York City Department of Education public school for the 2010-11 school year may apply. When necessary, public school enrollment will be verified to determine eligibility.
