My
daughter has severe dyslexia and was at a point in her life where she hated
school and reading. We ended up homeschooling and Stacey became our reading
teacher. She uses the Orton Gillingham approach to teaching kids phonics and
how to sound out words step by step. Once we started meeting with Stacey, my
daughter progressed rapidly and is now able to sound out almost any word. My
daughter is still way behind grade level --but she is making rapid progress.
Stacey is a veteran reading teacher with over 20 years experience and
previously taught at the Sterling School in Brooklyn. Stacey also has a fun
personality and tells stories and jokes with my daughter, and relates to her on
a personal level.

As
I write this I can hear Charlotte work with my daughter and explain for the
first time the difference between a democracy and a monarchy. My daughter is in
the 2nd grade and we wanted to begin to address civics education as we lead up
to this election. From the moment Charlotte started working with our daughter
we were impressed with her kindness, creativity and ability to engage and
excite. She is a kind, calm presence but is also firm and helps to direct when
needed. Charlotte comes prepared each week with great curriculum to support our
child, but also welcomes our feedback and input. I hope that we can continue to
work with Charlotte throughout this year as we navigate 100% remote schooling,
without Charlotte and the Greer Meister Group we would in a really tough spot.
I highly recommend Charlotte and all of the tutors associated with the Greer
Meister Group.

My
son was trying out for a musical theater middle school and need to be able to
perform a song and brief monologue to try out. Adam helped him with both,
suggesting both a song and monologue since we needed ideas. Adam was so skilled
in his ability to patiently teach my son how to sing (he had no previous
experience), and how to perform the monologue. Adam gave us feedback regularly
on how my son was doing, and what he needed to practice. Adam is kind, smart,
and excellent with kids. He was simply amazing, and I would recommend him

Evan has been a great tutor and friend. He taught my son virtually all through the pandemic. He also included him in several camps and matches in addition to our scheduled sessions to get him as much practice as possible. He is very prompt and was willing to work with our schedule as much as possible.

My
daughter worked with Praxis tutors (Eric & one of his other tutors) to
prepare for the SHSAT. She did a weekly class in the spring & took a few
practice tests through that, & consistently scored below Brooklyn Tech
cut-off (mostly because of speed issues). I found Praxis in Sept & she did
about 6 sessions with them and ended up scoring significantly above Stuy cut off
- so HUGE growth. Eric & his team are excellent at pinpointing &
addressing key areas that can make a difference - e.g., faster math strategies.
My son is now working with Praxis/Eric on SATs. He hasn't taken yet, but after
just one session his score on math section practice moved from 660 to 740.

Marissa
is an absolutely amazing writing tutor. First, she's taught every grade from
kindergarten through college. And she also constantly updates her knowledge
with certifications and the latest goings on in education. But most
importantly, she has this incredible way of making your child get into writing,
write well, enjoy it, and write from the heart. In addition, she sends amazing
emails detailing what she covers in each session. I'm a working writer and I
routinely learn a lot from her emails. She's tutored both of our sons, helping
them get into Hunter, through high school, and into college. She's just the
best. I recommend her wholeheartedly and without hesitation or reservation.

Mary has worked with my daughter and 3 other girls to form a learning pod this Fall. Mary comes to each session fully prepared with interesting, engaging learning activities. She is a calm, kind presence and all 4 of the children have described their time with Mary as the "best part of the week." Mary has seamlessly worked with each of their girls to focus on their strengths and also support areas that need additional attention. The girls in this pod range from an emerging reader to advanced readers, Mary meets each child where they are and also creates an environment where all the children respect each other's learning differences. We have received one comprehensive report from Mary and it was one of the most insightful and helpful forms of feedback on our child. I highly recommend Mary and all the tutors associated with The Greer Meister Group.

We
continue to be very happy with Ian. My boys (a freshman and a junior, both in
specialized High Schools) like working with him, tailors his lessons on either
what they need support with and/or to align with their curriculum. Ian tries to
be flexible with session scheduling (we do two 1-hour sessions, back to back)
to accommodate varying workloads from our boys' schools so it is sometimes
during the week, sometimes on the weekend based on our request. Like I said, he
tries to accommodate. A few days before the session, he will send out
assignments for our kids to do...takes them about an hour. If you want Ian to
take charge of the curriculum, he will do it but if you want to dictate what it
should be, he's fine with that. He's also very responsive to any emails we send
him.

was my child's classroom teacher for a year, and my son adored him. We feel
very lucky to have engaged him for literacy support during remote school. He is
entirely engaging, even on Zoom, and both a third grader and a sixth grader

harder to quantify, but just the fact that my kids happily write, revise, and
talk about grammar has been great. We can see into Google docs the kids are
working on, and it is great to watch their work online.

is a college student on a full scholarship for math. He comes from a very
modest background and is multicultural. For the past three years, my sons now
ages 13 and 15, have been completely engaged during math tutoring sessions and
even outside of that time. Omar always answered texts at any time of day
regarding math or even a personal question/need. He has a genuine knack for relating
to kids, he tailors their interests with the lessons. One of my sons loves
soccer and basketball, Omar weaved this into lessons. The other likes to sing
and perform and Omar found a place for this too. To my boys, he was
"cool" and approachable at all times. Their math scores soared and my
15 year old less than enthusiastic student is now handily passing AP math
courses, far ahead of his friends and peers. The 13 year sailing through
private school math performing a grade ahead. We have been thrilled with Omar
relationship and math skills.

hired Julie to do a quick review of math skills with our three teenagers as
they prepared for the SAT and ACT. The two that needed the least amount of help
appreciated the review and tips she offered. They both were pleased with their
results. My third child needed more time with Julie as she hadn’t been taught
all the math concepts she would need to take the SAT. This child has an
aptitude for math and benefited from the extra tutoring needed to be brought up
to speed. She hasn’t received her results yet but feels good about her
performance in the math section. As a former math teacher, Julie is very adept
at reading a child and working with parents on ways to reach the child. In our
case a quiet, guarded teen. She found common ground with our child and they
formed a solid working relationship. As a parent I appreciated her updates and
willingness to get to know my children for who they are and being able to reach
them in their own way. She is also a parent of a teenager which I find helpful.

This is both math- Algebra 1 mostly and Reading Comp. For our son, Andrew has
been a more hands on teaching support through 7th and 8th grade math and
developing reading comprehension skills and techniques. He has been encouraging

This tutor came highly recommended on PONYT, so I wanted to give another perspective. We hired him to help my daughter prepare for the Algebra 2/Trig Regents. His price was much higher than we had paid in the past ($130/hour as opposed to $80/hour), but he was willing to come to us, and we were very glad he had space in his schedule at such a late date. However, he and my daughter did not develop a good rapport. He would not help her figure out what she needed to work on- he expected her to lead the sessions and ask for the specific skills she wanted to work on. This was in stark contrast to the tutor she has worked with in the past, and since. She didn't feel the sessions were as productive as she hoped, and there definitely seemed to be a personality clash between the two of them. Ultimately he bailed on one of the last planned sessions before the Regents, and we were actually relieved because she was able to get two sessions with a previous tutor who had a cancelation. That tutor cost less, has a warmer personality, and helped my daughter figure out what she needed to work on.

Nick graduated from Stuyvesant and has a degree in engineering from SUNY Binghamton. He is currently getting his doctorate in PT. He is highly knowledgeable, flexible with scheduling times and location, and works with my daughter based on her needs each week. He also gently nudges her to think ahead about what kind of help she’ll need each session. He is getting my math-averse student through pre-calculus with ease.

This is, unfortunately, a warning to other parents. Luigi of Good Karma Tutoring came recommended.on the PONYT blog. He was to help tutor my child for Algebra I Regents. He seemed like a decent tutor with a good grasp of the subject. All was going okay until after one session, he said he thinks he is too busy to come anymore (this was right after he took two weeks off to go on vacation). There was no apology, no suggestion of anyone else and no follow up on what would be good for my son to work on in the remaining weeks. This was just a few weeks before the Regents and we had to scramble to find someone. We did find someone much better than Luigi in attitude and skills, but the suddenness was upsetting. I have since learned of a smilar incident with another parent whose child Luigi has tutored a few months before mine. In that case, he he has also quit abruptly and with no notice. I believe it is a pattern with this particular tutor.

My son auditioned for performing arts high schools in the fall of 2017. He prepared two monologues and musical theater song. It became clear as the audition dates neared that he needed outside direction and feedback for his acting audition outside of school and the home. Adam worked with my son four or five times to prepare for his auditions. He gave him excellent direction, built his confidence and even helped him with the acting in his song. The auditions were difficult, long days but my son had the training and guidance he needed to approach the experience with focus. He got into both Laguaria and Frank Sinatra for vocal music (both were his first choice studios). When my son got his acceptance letter after calling people in our family he asked for Adam’s phone number and called to let him know the result and to thank him for coaching because that was how much he felt Adam had supported him. My son will continue to work with him this freshman year of high school on both acting and audition songs.

Adam brings the complete package when it comes to monologue and audition coaching for high school admissions: he's a father of NYC public school teens, an accomplished Broadway performer, a compassionate teacher and a delightful person.
Adam works with students who are approaching the performing arts audition for high school by encouraging them to find appropriate and less-traveled monologues, then emphasizing their journey of discovery with the character. He understands what makes a performer compelling and intriguing and helps teens make the leap to what may be their first "high stakes" audition with great agility.

Jo was fabulous with my son. My son had ADHD so sometimes getting him to focus after school is hard. She did a great job and got both his test scores up. Jo also knew just the right amount of homework to give my son so that he was challenged but not overwhelmed. Every week, we received an email from the company Jo worked for called Next Level Learning. It contained information on what Jo had worked on with my son, how he did on practice tests and what his homework was for next week.

Please write a review of your experience
Andrew Breving is an exceptionally talented, wonderful tutor. I have three sons with very different personalities, and Andy has worked incredibly well with all three. He has helped them prepare for tests (ISEE, SHSAT, SAT), and he has also tutored my sons in academic subjects (writing, math, Latin). Andy gets along well with students and the tutoring sessions are pleasant and not stressful. His manner with students seems to decrease the students' stress level while increasing their confidence and motivation as well as their academic performance. My first son to work with Andy started working with him to prepare for the ISEE for entrance to 6th grade. He worked with him again on Latin, and then on SHSAT prep (and my son was then admitted to Stuy). Another of my sons struggles with math, and Andy helped him prepare for the SAT. That son's math score on the SAT improved enough to make a big difference. My youngest child has also done test prep (ISEE) as well as work in some academic subjects (Latin and writing). If you are looking for a highly skilled and dedicated tutor who knows how to work with kids and really gets along with them well, I highly recommend Andrew Breving.

A huge plus is that he is very accessible. In spite of a packed schedule, he responded to my daughter's email quickly and accommodated my request for extra review. After the initial appointment, Patrick laid out a well articulated and logical plan, referring to my daughter's strengths and weaknesses. I don't ask for feedback weekly. Adam is a serious actor himself, who really gets the dimensions of the craft, as well as being a dad, who gets the dimensions of working with teens. I have been consistently blown away by the ways he connected with my son, working with both his strengths and weaknesses to support searing performances as well as fantastic outcomes, namely acceptance at La Guardia drama as well as a private program last summer.
I strongly recommend Adam for any teen that is looking to break through, refine and evolve their acting at any point along the path, as well as to build confidence and a sense of conviction in their work.

I I am writing to recommend an excellent tutor in/around Brooklyn Heights. He helped my daughter prepare for the 7th grade ELA and Math State Exams, but also works with older students who are studying for the SAT/ACT. I found him to be personable, responsible, and an effective communicator with both my daughter and myself. He not only helped to improve her skills, but made her feel more confident, too. In addition to test prep, he also is available for homework assistance, chess/art lessons and especially feels strongly about working with students to improve their writing. He is an experienced teacher, a local parent, and as asset to our community. His name is Steven and you may contact him directly at: kunstler25@hotmail.com

Ariana works in a group of 3 students. She has different college age tutors but she likes it that way. If she doesn't get a concept with one person she could ask someone else. She gets about 1/2 hour one on one time then 1/2 hour group time. She likes when she is asked to solve a problem on the dry erase board. She's always excited when she gets the correct answer

They really connect with the child. Ari was getting 1's on her assessments now she receives 2. Not great but an improvement

The group prep courses that we looked into were either prohibitively expensive or not offered at a place and time we could take advantage of. Private tutoring was a good solution for us.

Michael successfully prepared my son for the SHSAT. He was very good at determining my son's areas of need for the test. I believe my son felt very comfortable with Michael and didn't consider his tutoring sessions or practice outside of the sessions particularly stressful or otherwise onerous. Michael seemed easy-going and didn't put pressure. Michael filled us in regarding our son's progress, and gave us suggestions on what he should do to prepare outside of the sessions. My son, along a few of his friends who also received tutoring with Michael, was accepted to Brooklyn Tech HS.

I have a disorganized, forgetful 14-year-old son and found a helpful book: "That Crumpled Paper Was Due Last Week: Helping Disorganized and Distracted Boys Succeed in School and Life," by Ana Homayoun. It lays out a whole program that's too intense for me to realistically follow with my son, but also has lots of good information that has helped me with my approach to supporting my son's homework and understanding his point of view.
Here's a piece from the Times about the author. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/01/education/01boys.html

My son has been working with Lisa Auerbach for over a year and she has been awesome with him. He is a truly disorganized boy finishing up 9th grade.

Ellen is extremely knowledgable in all subjects and works on executive functioning as well as trying to get to the root of the child's difficulty in a subject or school work in general. She has helped my child with organization, writing, math (algebra and geometry) science (biology, chemistry, physics) regents prep and SAT prep. She came highly recommended from my child's therapist and psychiatrist.

Talk to the tutor to find out their approach and make sure your child meets them first to see if there is any rapport. My child previously attending the Brooklyn Learning Center and thought the tutor was an idiot. Since he had no respect for her, he refused to work.

SHSAT PREP
For a group program, Naomi Bushman's program is fantastic. All 3 of my sons as well many many kids have taken her program for years and are very successful. She fills up very fast so e-mail her and she'll send you the information. Hers begins in the early or late Spring.

I want to second the endorsement for Naomi Bushman for SHSAT prep classes. She
can be contacted at: naomibushmantesting@gmail.com. Both of my sons have taken
her class and felt extremely well-prepared for the test. Naomi has a very well
thought-through program that includes excellent homework materials, including
glossaries of key math vocabulary, key math rules, etc. She gives a handful of
practice tests on weekend mornings in a public school setting so kids have the
test experience many times before they take it for real. And when she grades
the practice tests, she breaks down the scoring by type of question (such as
inference, main idea, vocabulary, etc.) so you can really see where your child
needs additional work.
I also want to mention that Naomi does SAT prep as well. She has a course about
to start for the March 9th SAT, which includes 8 classes and 5 practice tests.
She also has a less concentrated class for kids prepping for the May 4th SAT.
My sense is that these classes are also very well-designed.

likeable and explains clearly. expensive but worth it in a crunch.

I can recommend an excellent tutor for trig and chemistry. He got my son through the chemistry regents and seems to be great with any math or science (he is getting a PhD in physics.) He's low key, patient, and a good teacher-also is helpful with study skills and organization if needed.
His rates are not what I'd call super-low, but he is tutoring two students in Park Slope in Trig once a week as a group and I believe he would take a third student -- so in that setting the rates would be very reasonable. i just happen to know about the trig group because he comes to our house on 17 street right after to work w my son on Physics.

We used Alex at Brooklyn Math Tutors for my daughter's first year of 7th grade in the CIG program at Cunningham. He said her main problem wasn't the work; it was her confidence. So far this year she hasn't felt she needed help so maybe that was it.
I found this article he wrote on his website to be helpful:

If SAT prep is on your mind, check out this link from Revolution, I spoke with one of the preparators recently and they seem to be the real deal.
http://www.revolutionprep.com/ivy-programs
* They're good. They did group test prep at my daughters high school this past spring
* Both my kids did their SAT prep with Revolution. They both improved their scores
a lot over their initial practice tests, so in that sense it was good and
probably worth the money. My son would never have prepared on his own.
The issue I had with Revolution is that they were very disorganized. Both times,
the schedule was incorrect and the date given for the first class was wrong. My
son's instructor did not show up at all for the first class and was replaced,
but this set everything back by a week. I had paid for two private tutoring
sessions for my son, but between the scheduling issue and the tutor having very
little availability, he ended up getting only one session. Contact with
Revolution was always confusing; we would get phone calls and emails with
incorrect information; everyone was very nice but very confused. They need to
get their act together.
Do a search on College Confidential for Revolution Prep for more opinions. The
complaints there seem to be that the course moves too slowly for high-achieving
students (this was my daughter's opinion as well) and that the practice tests
are rigged, with the initial practice tests much easier than subsequent practice
tests, so that it always looks like the kid is improving.
I think the main value of these courses is that they force the kid to sit and
take a full SAT half-a-dozen times. If you have the kind of child who will
really and truly do this on his or her own, you can probably save yourself a few
hundred dollars.
The other thing that was useful was that they teach a formula for writing the
essays. It's stupid, but the kids have to play this game, unfortunately.
At the end of the day, I was happy with my kids' SAT scores, so to me it was
worth the money.
_______________
Revolution must have some sort of arrangement with the DOE, because they
marketed their service through both Murrow and Midwood high schools (where my 2
sons went). My youngest, now a senior at Midwood, took the course and got a
lot out of it. His SAT's went way up. He really liked his instructor (a
critical factor in getting a teen to focus). But I don't know if it is better
than Kaplan or Princeton.
