**we really liked berit anderson 917 797 9872
** really wonderful tutor named David Stone -- problem is he is
on the Upper West Side so it's a huge hassle going back and forth from
Park Slope. However, he's been so helpful to my son -- both in
improving his writing skills and in helping his self-esteem. His
number is (646)329-4546.

Math Tutor for 7th Grader
** Hi, we have a great tutor that we used for the last two years in math. we have referrred him to both girls and boys grades 5 thru 10 and everyone has raved about him. His name is Will Petzel 917-679-4196
**We just started with a new math tutor about 2 weeks ago. He has a
Master's in education, teaches middle school, and my son really likes
him compared to other tutor's we have used. He also travels to our
home and I believe he lives really close to Brooklyn Heights.
Name is Alex: 917-595-6979 or 718-768-2383
we had our girl work with Judith at Park Slope Tutorial on Math, actually
it was way more math than English. She also has at least two others who are
great who are on her staff now. 12th street park slope, no house visits as far
as I know, but always worth asking

She is a High School Math teacher and tutors my son in geometry and will also review algebra with him soon as well. I cannot say enough about her!
Wendy Menard currently teaches math full time at Midwood High school. She has great experience working with students that struggle with math as well as math whizzes. She LOVES MATH and it shows. She sees students at her home in Windsor Terrace, and she travels to student's homes. Discount for going to her house. Very good and dedicated
Justine Henning

Recommend Drew Abrams 585-260-4487
for chemistry, physics and all sorts of high school math. Very bright,
likeable and explains clearly. expensive but worth it in a crunch.
______________
I can recommend an excellent tutor for trig and chemistry. He got my son through the chemistry regents and seems to be great with any math or science (he is getting a PhD in physics.) He's low key, patient, and a good teacher-also is helpful with study skills and organization if needed.
His rates are not what I'd call super-low, but he is tutoring two students in Park Slope in Trig once a week as a group and I believe he would take a third student -- so in that setting the rates would be very reasonable. i just happen to know about the trig group because he comes to our house on 17 street right after to work w my son on Physics.

______________
we recently began using a tutor for math and standardized test prep for my 7th grade daughter.
The tutor came highly recommended by the learning specialist in my daughter's school, and the current and past clients I called for recommendations had nothing but the highest praise for her.
Now that she's been to our house a few times I can say the same. She is very good at what she does and is excellent at interacting with young people.
I think she'd be great for enrichment work for your child....

____________High School, SAT, and ACT math test prep
I recommend Philip Issa:
He tutors high school, SAT, and ACT math test prep.
he charges $50 and makes house calls.
Mt daughter gained 300 points from switching
to the ACT from the SAT and we used him
for math tutoring for this.

______________
We used Alex at Brooklyn Math Tutors for my daughter's first year of 7th grade in the CIG program at Cunningham. He said her main problem wasn't the work; it was her confidence. So far this year she hasn't felt she needed help so maybe that was it.
I found this article he wrote on his website to be helpful:
http://www.brooklynmathtutors.com/why-is-tutoring-so-expensive/
Also, as I remember you can also save money by committing to a series of tutoring sessions with them.

travel. He¹s a 21 year old college student, very smart (Stuyvesant grad,
National Merit Scholar, 800 Math and English SATs) but also very patient and
good with middle/high schoolers. He tutors math and does standardized test
prep -- SATs and specialized high school entrance exams. $25/hour.

and another family I know in the Slope used Michael Giles for SAT/ACT test prep and college essay assistance. He's on 4th Street and can be reached at 718-768-2372 or michaelgiles@ earthlink. net . I would recommend him. I also know a few families in the Slope who went to Judith at Park Slope Tutorial; my kids went to her over the years for math tutoring and other things so my son wanted a change (and a male tutor) for SAT. She's on 12th Street and can be reached at 718-499-3899 or 8409 or pstutorial@aol. com .

If SAT prep is on your mind, check out this link from Revolution, I spoke with one of the preparators recently and they seem to be the real deal.
http://www.revolutionprep.com/ivy-programs
* They're good. They did group test prep at my daughters high school this past spring
* Both my kids did their SAT prep with Revolution. They both improved their scores
a lot over their initial practice tests, so in that sense it was good and
probably worth the money. My son would never have prepared on his own.
The issue I had with Revolution is that they were very disorganized. Both times,
the schedule was incorrect and the date given for the first class was wrong. My
son's instructor did not show up at all for the first class and was replaced,
but this set everything back by a week. I had paid for two private tutoring
sessions for my son, but between the scheduling issue and the tutor having very
little availability, he ended up getting only one session. Contact with
Revolution was always confusing; we would get phone calls and emails with
incorrect information; everyone was very nice but very confused. They need to
get their act together.
Do a search on College Confidential for Revolution Prep for more opinions. The
complaints there seem to be that the course moves too slowly for high-achieving
students (this was my daughter's opinion as well) and that the practice tests
are rigged, with the initial practice tests much easier than subsequent practice
tests, so that it always looks like the kid is improving.
I think the main value of these courses is that they force the kid to sit and
take a full SAT half-a-dozen times. If you have the kind of child who will
really and truly do this on his or her own, you can probably save yourself a few
hundred dollars.
The other thing that was useful was that they teach a formula for writing the
essays. It's stupid, but the kids have to play this game, unfortunately.
At the end of the day, I was happy with my kids' SAT scores, so to me it was
worth the money.
_______________
Revolution must have some sort of arrangement with the DOE, because they
marketed their service through both Murrow and Midwood high schools (where my 2
sons went). My youngest, now a senior at Midwood, took the course and got a
lot out of it. His SAT's went way up. He really liked his instructor (a
critical factor in getting a teen to focus). But I don't know if it is better
than Kaplan or Princeton.
__________
We used Everest Tutoring located right on Mantague St in the Heights. Justin was great for our daughter especially in math. I intend on using him when the time comes for my son.

If you are looking for an SAT tutor, I highly recommend Jeremy Tillman for individual tutoring who is tutoring my daughter at the moment. She is getting confident and is learning a lot from him. He has degrees from Princeton and Stanford. He will come to your house in Brooklyn and his rates are very reasonable.

French Tutor
I can recommend Andre Moraillon, 212-874-5474 on the Upper West Side. He taught French at a high school in Great Neck, is a graduate of the Lycee in New York and works part time as an interpreter for the State Department. His French is impeccable and he’s very good at explaining the intricacies of the French language.

Hi there, I can recommend my daughter Charlotte Coates who tutors adults and teens in French. She's majoring in Francophone Studies at Columbia, lived in France for a good few years, and is considered as good as native!

Organization
I have a disorganized, forgetful 14-year-old son and found a helpful book: "That Crumpled Paper Was Due Last Week: Helping Disorganized and Distracted Boys Succeed in School and Life," by Ana Homayoun. It lays out a whole program that's too intense for me to realistically follow with my son, but also has lots of good information that has helped me with my approach to supporting my son's homework and understanding his point of view.
Here's a piece from the Times about the author. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/01/education/01boys.html
-----------
My son has been working with Lisa Auerbach for over a year and she has been awesome with him. He is a truly disorganized boy finishing up 9th grade.
She lives in Park Slope and has truly changed my relationship with my son who loves working with her. Motivates and organizes him in all aspects of his school work and projects.
