My daughter has severe dyslexia and was at a point in her life where she hated school and reading. We ended up homeschooling and Stacey became our reading teacher. She uses the Orton Gillingham approach to teaching kids phonics and how to sound out words step by step. Once we started meeting with Stacey, my daughter progressed rapidly and is now able to sound out almost any word. My daughter is still way behind grade level --but she is making rapid progress. Stacey is a veteran reading teacher with over 20 years experience and previously taught at the Sterling School in Brooklyn. Stacey also has a fun personality and tells stories and jokes with my daughter, and relates to her on a personal level.

As I write this I can hear Charlotte work with my daughter and explain for the first time the difference between a democracy and a monarchy. My daughter is in the 2nd grade and we wanted to begin to address civics education as we lead up to this election. From the moment Charlotte started working with our daughter we were impressed with her kindness, creativity and ability to engage and excite. She is a kind, calm presence but is also firm and helps to direct when needed. Charlotte comes prepared each week with great curriculum to support our child, but also welcomes our feedback and input. I hope that we can continue to work with Charlotte throughout this year as we navigate 100% remote schooling, without Charlotte and the Greer Meister Group we would in a really tough spot. I highly recommend Charlotte and all of the tutors associated with the Greer Meister Group.

My son was trying out for a musical theater middle school and need to be able to perform a song and brief monologue to try out. Adam helped him with both, suggesting both a song and monologue since we needed ideas. Adam was so skilled in his ability to patiently teach my son how to sing (he had no previous experience), and how to perform the monologue. Adam gave us feedback regularly on how my son was doing, and what he needed to practice. Adam is kind, smart, and excellent with kids. He was simply amazing, and I would recommend him without reservation.

My daughter worked with Praxis tutors (Eric & one of his other tutors) to prepare for the SHSAT. She did a weekly class in the spring & took a few practice tests through that, & consistently scored below Brooklyn Tech cut-off (mostly because of speed issues). I found Praxis in Sept & she did about 6 sessions with them and ended up scoring significantly above Stuy cut off - so HUGE growth. Eric & his team are excellent at pinpointing & addressing key areas that can make a difference - e.g., faster math strategies. My son is now working with Praxis/Eric on SATs. He hasn't taken yet, but after just one session his score on math section practice moved from 660 to 740.

Marissa is an absolutely amazing writing tutor. First, she's taught every grade from kindergarten through college. And she also constantly updates her knowledge with certifications and the latest goings on in education. But most importantly, she has this incredible way of making your child get into writing, write well, enjoy it, and write from the heart. In addition, she sends amazing emails detailing what she covers in each session. I'm a working writer and I routinely learn a lot from her emails. She's tutored both of our sons, helping them get into Hunter, through high school, and into college. She's just the best. I recommend her wholeheartedly and without hesitation or reservation.

Mary has worked with my daughter and 3 other girls to form a learning pod this Fall. Mary comes to each session fully prepared with interesting, engaging learning activities. She is a calm, kind presence and all 4 of the children have described their time with Mary as the "best part of the week." Mary has seamlessly worked with each of their girls to focus on their strengths and also support areas that need additional attention. The girls in this pod range from an emerging reader to advanced readers, Mary meets each child where they are and also creates an environment where all the children respect each other's learning differences. We have received one comprehensive report from Mary and it was one of the most insightful and helpful forms of feedback on our child. I highly recommend Mary and all the tutors associated with The Greer Meister Group.

Ian has been tutoring my boys for a couple of years now, first in Math (Algebra, Geometry, Algebra-2) and now SAT Prep (Math and English) for my HS junior. I asked Ian if it would be ok for me to review him and he agreed so not being familiar with his entire repertoire of skills, I asked him. As per Ian - "I tutor mathematics for all ages and grade levels, from kindergarten to calculus. I also do SAT prep (all sections), as well as prep for the AP Calculus and Physics exams (that is, AP Calculus AB and BC, and Physics 1, 2, and C). As a certified teacher of English as a Second Language, and someone who has written many essays throughout his academic career, I can also provide support for writing."

We continue to be very happy with Ian. My boys (a freshman and a junior, both in specialized High Schools) like working with him, tailors his lessons on either what they need support with and/or to align with their curriculum. Ian tries to be flexible with session scheduling (we do two 1-hour sessions, back to back) to accommodate varying workloads from our boys' schools so it is sometimes during the week, sometimes on the weekend based on our request. Like I said, he tries to accommodate. A few days before the session, he will send out assignments for our kids to do...takes them about an hour. If you want Ian to take charge of the curriculum, he will do it but if you want to dictate what it should be, he's fine with that. He's also very responsive to any emails we send him.

William was my child's classroom teacher for a year, and my son adored him. We feel very lucky to have engaged him for literacy support during remote school. He is entirely engaging, even on Zoom, and both a third grader and a sixth grader (boys) enjoy their sessions. Because they are working on writing, progress is harder to quantify, but just the fact that my kids happily write, revise, and talk about grammar has been great. We can see into Google docs the kids are working on, and it is great to watch their work online.

Omar is a college student on a full scholarship for math. He comes from a very modest background and is multicultural. For the past three years, my sons now ages 13 and 15, have been completely engaged during math tutoring sessions and even outside of that time. Omar always answered texts at any time of day regarding math or even a personal question/need. He has a genuine knack for relating to kids, he tailors their interests with the lessons. One of my sons loves soccer and basketball, Omar weaved this into lessons. The other likes to sing and perform and Omar found a place for this too. To my boys, he was "cool" and approachable at all times. Their math scores soared and my 15 year old less than enthusiastic student is now handily passing AP math courses, far ahead of his friends and peers. The 13 year sailing through private school math performing a grade ahead. We have been thrilled with Omar relationship and math skills.

We hired Julie to do a quick review of math skills with our three teenagers as they prepared for the SAT and ACT. The two that needed the least amount of help appreciated the review and tips she offered. They both were pleased with their results. My third child needed more time with Julie as she hadn’t been taught all the math concepts she would need to take the SAT. This child has an aptitude for math and benefited from the extra tutoring needed to be brought up to speed. She hasn’t received her results yet but feels good about her performance in the math section. As a former math teacher, Julie is very adept at reading a child and working with parents on ways to reach the child. In our case a quiet, guarded teen. She found common ground with our child and they formed a solid working relationship. As a parent I appreciated her updates and willingness to get to know my children for who they are and being able to reach them in their own way. She is also a parent of a teenager which I find helpful.

They then identified areas that the school had not covered and he taught her very well. This is both math- Algebra 1 mostly and Reading Comp. For our son, Andrew has been a more hands on teaching support through 7th and 8th grade math and developing reading comprehension skills and techniques. He has been encouraging and direct without being too critical or too laissez faire. He has worked closely with me to understand the needs of the very different learners in our family. Both our children have enjoyed and gotten a lot our of working with him.

Jonathan has bachelor and advanced degrees in Fine Arts/Visual Arts and Creative Writing (Fiction Concentration), and he’s taught creative writing to more than a hundred middle schoolers in NYC through the Teachers & Writers Collaborative. He’s also a writer himself, with a debut novel coming out in 2021, as well as a co-organizer of the highly regarded Brooklyn Speculative Fiction Writers group. He offers tutoring in creative/fiction writing, drawing/illustration, and the intersection of both (as in graphic novels/comics, which may be of interest to both advanced and reluctant writers) for upper elementary, middle, and high school students. His 1:1 lesson fees are extremely reasonable, and he alos offers discounted rates for small group pods and a sliding scale for families who need it. My daughter looks forward to her lessons, which he makes really fun and engaging. Highly recommended!!

This tutor came highly recommended on PONYT, so I wanted to give another perspective. We hired him to help my daughter prepare for the Algebra 2/Trig Regents. His price was much higher than we had paid in the past ($130/hour as opposed to $80/hour), but he was willing to come to us, and we were very glad he had space in his schedule at such a late date. However, he and my daughter did not develop a good rapport. He would not help her figure out what she needed to work on- he expected her to lead the sessions and ask for the specific skills she wanted to work on. This was in stark contrast to the tutor she has worked with in the past, and since. She didn't feel the sessions were as productive as she hoped, and there definitely seemed to be a personality clash between the two of them. Ultimately he bailed on one of the last planned sessions before the Regents, and we were actually relieved because she was able to get two sessions with a previous tutor who had a cancelation. That tutor cost less, has a warmer personality, and helped my daughter figure out what she needed to work on.

He is highly knowledgeable, flexible with scheduling times and location, and works with my daughter based on her needs each week. He also gently nudges her to think ahead about what kind of help she’ll need each session. He is getting my math-averse student through pre-calculus with ease.

This is, unfortunately, a warning to other parents. Luigi of Good Karma Tutoring came recommended.on the PONYT blog. He was to help tutor my child for Algebra I Regents.  He seemed like a decent tutor with a good grasp of the subject.  All was going okay until after one session, he said he thinks he is too busy to come anymore (this was right after he took two weeks off to go on vacation). There was no apology, no suggestion of anyone else and no follow up on what would be good for my son to work on in the remaining weeks.  This was just a few weeks before the Regents and we had to scramble to find someone. We did find someone much better than Luigi in attitude and skills, but the suddenness was upsetting. I have since learned of a smilar incident with another parent whose child Luigi has tutored a few months before mine. In that case, he he has also quit abruptly and with no notice.  I believe it is a pattern with this particular tutor.

My son auditioned for performing arts high schools in the fall of 2017. He prepared two monologues and musical theater song. It became clear as the audition dates neared that he needed outside direction and feedback for his acting audition outside of school and the home. Adam worked with my son four or five times to prepare for his auditions. He gave him excellent direction, built his confidence and even helped him with the acting in his song. The auditions were difficult, long days but my son had the training and guidance he needed to approach the experience with focus. He got into both Laguaria and Frank Sinatra for vocal music (both were his first choice studios). When my son got his acceptance letter after calling people in our family he asked for Adam’s phone number and called to let him know the result and to thank him for coaching because that was how much he felt Adam had supported him. My son will continue to work with him this freshman year of high school on both acting and audition songs.

Adam brings the complete package when it comes to monologue and audition coaching for high school admissions: he's a father of NYC public school teens, an accomplished Broadway performer, a compassionate teacher and a delightful person.

Adam works with students who are approaching the performing arts audition for high school by encouraging them to find appropriate and less-traveled monologues, then emphasizing their journey of discovery with the character. He understands what makes a performer compelling and intriguing and helps teens make the leap to what may be their first "high stakes" audition with great agility.

Jo was fabulous with my son. My son had ADHD so sometimes getting him to focus after school is hard. She did a great job and got both his test scores up. Jo also knew just the right amount of homework to give my son so that he was challenged but not overwhelmed. Every week, we received an email from the company Jo worked for called Next Level Learning. It contained information on what Jo had worked on with my son, how he did on practice tests and what his homework was for next week.

ACT / SAT tutor

I can't say enough good things about the ACT tutor we had.

His name is RICK HIRSTIN.

He moved here from the midwest and specializes in the ACT. He also does SAT, and he skypes as well as does in person work. He is super, super smart, yet, very kind and has a laid back style that really appeals to teenagers.

My son really liked him a lot-- and has stayed in touch with him.
He brought my son's scores up 5 points--- and he was regularly scoring a perfect score in practices.

I can't thank him enough-- can't recommend him more highly--and think my son's acceptances to schools was due largely to his help. He also helps with the college essay--if you want/need that as well.

I heartily recommend: Edward Antoine (184 16 St betw 5/6 Av) who tutors for the ACT, SATs, and SHSATs.

Ed helped both my kids with SHSAT and then SATs - he helped raise their scores substantially on SATs. I did private classes for my son and put together a small group class for my daughter, cuz they have different learning styles.

I tried cheaper tutors who sounded great in action but just made my kid  feel stupid when she still didn't understand the material and scores didn't budge.

Ed also well understands the challenges of ADD. I doubt he’ll come to your home, though.

Andrew Breving is an exceptionally talented, wonderful tutor. I have three sons with very different personalities, and Andy has worked incredibly well with all three. He has helped them prepare for tests (ISEE, SHSAT, SAT), and he has also tutored my sons in academic subjects (writing, math, Latin).  Andy gets along well with students and the tutoring sessions are pleasant and not stressful. His manner with students seems to decrease the students' stress level while increasing their confidence and motivation as well as their academic performance.  My first son to work with Andy started working with him to prepare for the ISEE for entrance to 6th grade. He worked with him again on Latin, and then on SHSAT prep (and my son was then admitted to Stuy). Another of my sons struggles with math, and Andy helped him prepare for the SAT. That son's math score on the SAT improved enough to make a big difference. My youngest child has also done test prep (ISEE) as well as work in some academic subjects (Latin and writing). If you are looking for a highly skilled and dedicated tutor who knows how to work with kids and really gets along with them well, I highly recommend Andrew Breving.

He is very calm and patient, yet persistent.  A huge plus is that he is very accessible. In spite of a packed schedule, he responded to my daughter's email quickly and accommodated my request for extra review. After the initial appointment, Patrick laid out a well articulated and logical plan, referring to my daughter's strengths and weaknesses. I don't ask for feedback weekly. We had a great experience with Praxis for my daughter.  We worked with a tutor named Max (not sure he is still working with them) and he was fantastic especially on the math section of the SHSAT but also on the english side too.

Very responsive, on time, engaged and focused. Also really easy to relate to for my daughter and excellent at helping her understand what she was missing, and how to fix it. He gave us homework promptly and as needed.  We found the 1/1 approach to the SHSAT was much more effective use of funds. Probably the same cost as a class but the teaching could be much more targeted.

We ended up using Max again in June to help prep for the Algebra regents. Our daughter had a terrible math teacher in 8th grade, and he helped her get ready for that. She didn't do as well as she would have liked but way better than she would have otherwise. She saw him for about 3 sessions for that.

The head of Praxis was also super easy to work with and coordinate.  Billing is simple and online.

And my daughter did well so I was happy about that. Her scores went up quite a bit, and she qualified for Stuyvesant, which was her goal.

TIME TO REVIEW

Caitlin has worked with our child from the third grade through high school.  She provided our daughter with a fundamental grounding in grammar that has been the foundation for her written work in all disciplines.  Caitlin took an extremely shy, but creative child and empowered her and instilled confidence by having high expectations while masterfully drawing the work out of our child.  In the initial years the meetings were more frequent and the lessons more structured around grammar, organization, learning to read and assistance organizing her thoughts.  She taught her how to outline, develop a thesis statement and generally present her written work more effectively and orally as well (which was a challenge for our daughter).  As our daughter progressed in school, she would reach out to Caitlin, as needed, at times for term papers in completely different classes (History, etc.), as she trusts and values Caitlin's input deeply.

Their relationship fostered a love of creative writing, which led our daughter to take after-school classes and workshops over the years.  Her technical writing is impeccable.  Her creative writing is her greatest strength and passion and we credit Caitlin for developing and honing that gift.   Our daughter has won multiple school awards for English and is working with Caitlin on creative fiction pieces for publication.  She achieves high grades in classes and on standardized tests in English and Reading.  We used to joke that she would take Caitlin to college with her if she could, but Caitlin did her one better and gave her the gift of working independently and achieving success on her own.  The greatest gift of all, however, is our daughter's absolute passion and love of literature, reading and writing.  It brings her pure joy.

Caitlin is so much more than a superbly skilled tutor.  She is holistic in her approach.  She knows how to focus a student and foster an environment for learning.  She is finely attuned to our daughter's emotional state and has strong EQ.  She knows when to dive into an assignment and teach and when she needs to take a moment to figure out if there is something outside of the scholastic work that needs to be addressed.  Caitlin knows when to reach out to a parent and appropriately refers the family out if there is something outside of her expertise.  Caitlin is highly organized and always provided us with detailed written feedback after each session which was helpful to us as working parents who could not always be present to get the feedback live.

Through her group Greer Meister, Caitlin has also provided us exceptional tutors in other disciplines over the years (math, science, Spanish, and ACT prep).  Like Caitlin they are each talented and artistic in their own fields of study and work and have been strong role models for our daughter.

We give Caitlin our highest recommendation.

He tutors high school and college-level math, science, english and history.

TIME TO REVIEW

My child worked directly with Lisa Bowstead on SHSAT prep and later with one of her hired tutors for SAT. She's a great tutor, and her hired tutor also was very good. Her expertise went beyond the specific concepts that my child needed help with; she gave great tips on test taking and on the entire test. We really valued her expertise and recommend her highly as a tutor.

The only downside is that her office is rather disorganized. She's not very responsive to calls and emails, and it took some patience to set up a tutoring schedule. But the tutoring itself and her relationship to our teen was excellent.

We had a great experience with Lisa at Cobble Hill Think Tank.  Both our kids really connected with her.  They did both groups and individually tutoring one for elementary and middle school math and one for SHSAT.  We plan to use her again for tutoring and test prep.
Cost reasonable especially for groups.

TIME TO REVIEW

Adam Grupper is a great theater auditions coach. My daughter used him as a freshman last year when she auditioned for a lead role in the Brooklyn Technical High School’s production of Cinderella, a role she subsequently won. He has performed on Broadway and is very personable, great with teens and responsive.

Although we have not used him for monologue coaching for high school auditions, I understand he is very experienced in helping kids with those. He can be reached via his website https://www.adamgrupper.com.

I have no affiliation with Adam other than being very happy with his work with my daughter.

I want to offer a shout out for a fantastic drama coach, Adam Grupper. Adam is a serious actor himself, who really gets the dimensions of the craft, as well as being a dad, who gets the dimensions of working with teens. I have been consistently blown away by the ways he connected with my son, working with both his strengths and weaknesses to support searing performances as well as fantastic outcomes, namely acceptance at La Guardia drama as well as a private program last summer.

I strongly recommend Adam for any teen that is looking to break through, refine and evolve their acting at any point along the path, as well as to build confidence and a sense of conviction in their work.

Nick was extraordinarily helpful in tutoring our son in trigonometry. He struggled mightily and Nick's calm, reassuring presence was invaluable. In fact, he recently passed the trig regents with a 30 point increase, having failed it last year. Nick also communicated with the teacher and on one occasion, went over an exam and found that our son had been mistakenly graded incorrectly. He followed up with the teacher and also coached our son to speak to the teacher himself. I initially found Nick on the PoNYT blog and am so glad I did. I recommend him highly!

I think Anthony is a very good tutor even though my 16-yr-old, who resents having to learn math at all, was resistant to him. He is calm, quiet, confident, very patient with my daughter who was actively acting out her desire not to be there. So in the end, we couldn't make it work. But I nonetheless highly recommend Anthony. He was willing to obtain materials from her teachers in order to better address my daughter's actual curriculum. He tried to engage my daughter about high school and life in an effort to have her be more open to learning. He was also flexible about scheduling. (I don't believe in jerking around anyone who is working freelance but appreciated that he was flexible when needed by us.)

He felt she needed one more day and we had scheduling conflicts and he said he'd call and do a short session over the phone with her at no charge. It ended up being a full session and he gave her a nice pep talk at the end as she was taking the test in a day or two. He's an all around nice guy and really seems to be into what he's doing.

She wouldn't get back to you to schedule sessions, you would have to go to the location where she would be sitting there doing nothing. I'd ask why she didn't call me back or respond to my emails and on at least 2 times she said she was sick. Well, sorry to hear that but you're running a business and you have my money as I paid up front. My daughter also said when she took the practice SAT's at her place it would be noisy and she would forget she was timing her!! In the end, she ended the sessions my daughter was in and never made up the classes that we were owed bc of her being so difficult to track down to schedule appointments. I just gave up. The tutoring was also subpar.

We've used Marisa twice and both times she was fantastic. She tutored our younger son for essay writing for the Hunter test. And she was phenomenal. I think I learned more from her emails about our son's assessment and her lesson plan than I did in graduate school--and I'm a writer. And it worked. Our son got into Hunter. Based on that, we hired Marisa to tutor our older son, who is a fine writer, to help him with organizational tasks related to writing. Again, her emails alone were worth the experience. They were amazing. And she helped our son push through his specific writing issues and got him to learn to enjoy and speed up the process of writing, which is worth it's weight in gold. Rather than take two hours to write a paragraph, he now can churn out lengthy papers in the same amount of time. HE credits her with helping him learn to do that.

The great thing about Marisa is that she really gets to know your child and figure out very specifically what the issues are. Because of her extensive background and training, she then crafts a sophisticated-yet-implementable plan specifically suited to your child. Then, she follows up and helps them through assignments until they can stand on their own. And that makes all of the difference. Also, feedback from our sons' teachers has been fantastic in terms of their writing and organizational skills. I recommend her without hesitation.

Calling Audrey a tutor doesn't begin to encompass the skills and sensitivity she brings to her one-to-one teaching of many subjects, including life. In the beginning, she tutored two of my kids in elementary school math. At later points, she worked on prep for standarized exams. She's worked on English and history with one of my high schoolers, and at one point was working with each of them on individual projects they were thinking of pursuing for bat mitzvahs. (She is Education Director at East Midwood Jewish Center.) She is now working with one of my teens on ACT prep and helping her look for colleges, a task that fills her with great anxiety. She brings a mature understanding of human beings to her work that a brainiac college student is unlikely to have.

What is the ONE piece of advice you would give people who are looking for the right tutor to help them choose the one that is the best fit for them/their family.

Fit of temperament and learning style is essential, and a tutor is only successful to the extent that there is a good fit with the student. As much as I extol Audrey's greatness, I also know that she might not be the right fit for every student. (Hard to believe, since she's such a savvy and sensitive person...) I just reluctantly discontinued an excellent math tutor to whom my teen was too resistent to learn anything. Leading a horse to water etc.

Please write a review of your experience in the box provided: Our son worked with Dr. Liora Brosh, an NYU professor, to prepare for the English and Writing subtests of the ACT and to develop college-level academic writing skills. We can't say enough good things about the results of his time with Dr. Brosh. He was happy with his scores, and he wrote and revised a series of sophisticated academic papers of increasing complexity. He felt working with Dr. Brosh opened up a whole new level of excellence in his writing, something he found both surprising and enjoyable. Dr. Brosh was prepared for every session with a lesson plan and study questions about the literature he was reading. She worked with an eye towards developing the next writing skill he would need, and was encouraging to him while providing detailed feedback to us. Dr. Brosh has specific training to in teaching academic writing skills in a structured and supportive manner, and can also teach literature, grammar, and how to write essays and short responses that meet the requirements of standardized tests. She is open to teaching small groups. We highly recommend her! She may be reached at lsb3@nyu.edu . (lsb3 AT nyu DOT edu) or 347-266-3992 (cell). Professor's Qualifications: Dr. Brosh has a Ph.D. in English from New York University. The scholarship Dr. Brosh was awarded when she was accepted to NYU's doctoral program involved her teaching at NYU's Expository Writing Program. The Expository Writing Program at NYU trains graduate students in the teaching of composition, and is considered one of the best in the country. Participants are required to take courses in the theory of teaching composition, and teach students under close supervision for 3 years. Dr. Brosh has since taught freshman composition at NYU, the University of Connecticut, Monmouth University, Parsons School of Design, the Pratt Institute and Long Island University. She has also taught upper level and graduate level college courses in history, literature, and film and therefore knows what kind of writing is required of college students. She currently teaches at NYU and the University of Connecticut at Stamford. Dr. Brosh's book, Screening Novel Women: From Domestic Fiction to Film, was published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2008.

She not only helped him figure out the subject of his essay, she stayed on him to rewrite it until it was perfect. Then, to ensure that his talents and accomplishments would be truly evident to the college admissions committee, she had her own son (who has editing experience), help Alex put together a video of interviews about him, his music and his acting accomplishments. Alex got into his dream college and there was no doubt in any of our minds that it wouldn't have happened without Laurie's tireless help and encouragement. Five stars and two thumbs up!

She was enthusiastic, organized, funny and sensitive to my 11 yr old daughter's needs and issues. I asked her one day how my daughter learns and she demonstrated a very sophisticated understanding of the different ways children take absorb knowledge. She told me that my daughter needed to first play a game or draw a picture before heading into the challenging academic work. My daughter has a condition called selective mutism, an anxiety disorder that makes her appear very shy and introverted. she is loathe to talk to strangers or authority figures. It was pretty evident that Shannon had the touch with my her. After one or two sessions my daughter felt so comfortable with Shannon that I heard them talking and laughing through the door. Sonya's grades have greatly improved and she exhibits much greater confidence when writing and preparing for math and science assignments. I attribute much of her current academic success to her work with Shannon

Shannon has been a wonderful support to my daughter. When I first spoke with Shannon about my needs specific to my child, she was extremely attentive and had great ideas and strategies around how she would best approach the relationship. She put a great amount of time, care and effort into preparing for the first lesson to ensure that my daughter felt happy, comfortable and was engaged in the way she needed. To this day, Shannon always comes to each session with a plan and is thoughtful to ensure she is covering what needs to be addressed but also allowing for the session to be engaging and fun. I'm not able to be at the weekly sessions due to my work schedule, but I receive a recap email after each session that outlines what was reviewed, how my daughter felt, performed, and next steps and areas for focus. Shannon is truly invested in my daughter's growth and well being. I feel this in all of my dealings with her. She is extremely intelligent in all subjects and has a very special way of presenting the work to my daughter. My daughter has benefited a great deal from her work with Shannon, and we are all appreciative to have Shannon as support.

We were in a panic and didn't know where to begin when a personal friend referred Ms. Johnson to us, and I think it's safe to say that she is the smartest and most talented Visual Arts tutor I have encountered. Her expertise was a home run---highly skilled, focused, detailed oriented, very professional, and showed a passion for knowledge that is simply unparalleled. What's more, she had an uncanny ability to make my daughter and I understand the subject matter and requirements to be successful. She is a naturally gifted teacher and leader, and I know she will be an excellent tutor for your children as she has done for my daughter. Therefore, I highly recommend Risa as an excellent choice as a tutor for Visual Art as well as other subjects.

When we came in here last summer, my child had severe anxiety when it came to school. He struggled with Math and Reading. But, most importantly he was resisting any help we tried to provide at home or at his school. He has been working with Ms. Jean and absolutely loves her. Her easy going and fun approach works for him and his needs. His skill level has drastically improved and so did his confidence. We are very happy.

Mrs. Camille is a wonderful and very skilled teacher. She has a great relationship with my daughter. She has always stuck by my child even when my daughter didn't feel she needed one. She has great patience which is a talent every tutor must have. I receive a progress report after every class and I show these to my daughter's teacher for review. She appreciates the feedback and has noticed the changes in my daughters attitude and skills. My daughter feels more confident in her work and now cant' wait for her tutor to come over. I would recommend ARC and Mrs. Camille to anyone needing a tutor. I am so glad I decided to use them.

Jill has been great for my daughter. She's a Princeton grad (Chemistry) who has worked as a classroom teacher, but prefers working on-on-one with kids. Great female role model for girls who are faltering in science/math confidence. She has become a friend, her style is very laid back, but focused. My daughter looks forward to seeing her. And she has gone from failing (literally) to doing well (B+ to A-) in math and science at Bard - which is a demanding program.

Dan worked with my son on math and verbal (especially logic, which improved very fast). Dan (a summa cum laude Columbia grad, in philosophy) is extremely knowledgeable about the SHSAT, and always seems to have some tip for approaching questions more efficiently. His teaching style is conversational, but also methodical and structured. He will invent test questions in order to hone in on where my son needed work. My son is now at Brooklyn Tech. Dan later worked with my friend's son as well, who especially needed help with scrambled paragraphs and logic (he hasn't taken the test yet). Dan was also great at communicating with parents, and most importantly, my son loved learning from him.

The balance of enthusiasm and expertise she brings to her teaching makes her an excellent match for middle and high school students. What impressed me most was that he did not seem to lecture to the kids at all - he is smart enough to understand what they are thinking and ask the right questions to bring them along in the thinking process. These reviews have been received over several years on the Parents of NY Teens Yahoo Group

I have a disorganized, forgetful 14-year-old son and found a helpful book: "That Crumpled Paper Was Due Last Week: Helping Disorganized and Distracted Boys Succeed in School and Life," by Ana Homayoun. It lays out a whole program that's too intense for me to realistically follow with my son, but also has lots of good information that has helped me with my approach to supporting my son's homework and understanding his point of view.

Here's a piece from the Times about the author. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/01/education/01boys.html

-----------

My son has been working with Lisa Auerbach for over a year and she has been awesome with him. He is a truly disorganized boy finishing up 9th grade.

She lives in Park Slope and has truly changed my relationship with my son who loves working with her.  Motivates and organizes him in all aspects of his school work and projects.

SHSAT PREP

For a group program, Naomi Bushman's program is fantastic. All 3 of my sons as well many many kids have taken her program for years and are very successful. She fills up very fast so e-mail her and she'll send you the information. Hers begins in the early or late Spring.

I want to second the endorsement for Naomi Bushman for SHSAT prep classes. She
can be contacted at: naomibushmantesting@gmail.com. Both of my sons have taken
her class and felt extremely well-prepared for the test. Naomi has a very well
thought-through program that includes excellent homework materials, including
glossaries of key math vocabulary, key math rules, etc. She gives a handful of
practice tests on weekend mornings in a public school setting so kids have the
test experience many times before they take it for real. And when she grades
the practice tests, she breaks down the scoring by type of question (such as
inference, main idea, vocabulary, etc.) so you can really see where your child
needs additional work.

I also want to mention that Naomi does SAT prep as well. She has a course about
to start for the March 9th SAT, which includes 8 classes and 5 practice tests.
She also has a less concentrated class for kids prepping for the May 4th SAT.
My sense is that these classes are also very well-designed.

She home schools other peoples kids. Has lots of experience and is good at accessing children's needs. Sara seemed to learn very quickly with her. She lives in Lefferts Gardens area area of Brooklyn. Sara went to her house. Not sure if she goes to other folks homes or not. A little more money than Wendy.

MATH / SCIENCE

For all our math and science tutoring we have used Alex, as high school teacher

@ $50/hr . He travels to you. You can reach him at:

Alex: Farun69@aol.com 917 238 5221

Recommend Drew Abrams 585-260-4487
for chemistry, physics and all sorts of high school math.  Very bright,
likeable and explains clearly.  expensive but worth it in a crunch.

______________

I can recommend an excellent tutor for trig and chemistry.  He got my son through the chemistry regents and seems to be great with any math or science (he is getting a PhD in physics.)  He's low key, patient, and a good teacher-also is helpful with study skills and organization if needed.
His rates are not what I'd call super-low, but he is tutoring two students in Park Slope in Trig once a week as a group and I believe he would take a third student -- so in that setting the rates would be very reasonable.  i just happen to know about the trig group because he comes to our house on 17 street right after to work w my son on Physics.

High School, SAT, and ACT math test prep

I recommend Philip Issa:
He tutors high school, SAT, and ACT math test prep.
he charges $50 and makes house calls.
Mt daughter gained 300 points from switching
to the ACT from the SAT and we used him
for math tutoring for this.

______________

We used Alex at Brooklyn Math Tutors for my daughter's first year of 7th grade in the CIG program at Cunningham. He said her main problem wasn't the work; it was her confidence. So far this year she hasn't felt she needed help so maybe that was it.

I found this article he wrote on his website to be helpful:
http://www.brooklynmathtutors.com/why-is-tutoring-so-expensive/

Also, as I remember you can also save money by committing to a series of tutoring sessions with them.

Wendy Menard at wjmenard@gmail.com is absolutely wonderful!
She is a High School Math teacher and tutors my son in geometry and will also review algebra with him soon as well. I cannot say enough about her!

___________

I highly recommend Jennifer Croke. (347 )2476850. She tutors all levels of math. I have used her with my kids and also recommend her professionally for kids I work with that have learning issues

____________

This woman, Leora Trub, has done phenomenal work with my rising 8th grade daughter - helped her bring up her standardized test scores by 20 percentage points! She has a fantastic way with young people. She mostly teaches by videochat, using some online programs and a shared screen and it is amazingly effective. Her rates are also very reasonable. Couldn't recommend her more highly: Leora Trub (732) 407-7928  and leora.trub@gmail.com.
If you call her tell her I sent you.

My son did some SAT prep work with a local tutor, Rachel Coates, in Windsor Terrace. She was also good and helped him prep for his second round of SATs, though the improvement wasn't marked.

Another tutor I would recommend, Jason Reed, lives in Park Slope but can

travel. He¹s a 21 year old college student, very smart (Stuyvesant grad,

good with middle/high schoolers. He tutors math and does standardized test

_____________

Jason Reed
A current math college student at Brooklyn College. Perfect score on SAT. Sweet kid, quiet. Low rates. Not sure he would be good to assess a kid, but good with specific tasks.  Also, not sure of his schedule this year. Can be hard to get a hold of.

and another family I know in the Slope used Michael Giles for SAT/ACT test prep and college essay assistance.  He's on 4th Street and can be reached at 718-768-2372 or michaelgiles@ earthlink. net .  I would recommend him.  I also know a few families in the Slope who went to Judith at Park Slope Tutorial; my kids went to her over the years for math tutoring and other things so my son wanted a change (and a male tutor) for SAT.  She's on 12th Street and can be reached at 718-499-3899 or 8409 or pstutorial@aol. com .

If SAT prep is on your mind, check out this link from Revolution, I spoke with one of the preparators recently and they seem to be the real deal.

http://www.revolutionprep.com/ivy-programs

* They're good.  They did group test prep at my daughters high school this past spring

* Both my kids did their SAT prep with Revolution. They both improved their scores
a lot over their initial practice tests, so in that sense it was good and
probably worth the money. My son would never have prepared on his own.

The issue I had with Revolution is that they were very disorganized. Both times,
the schedule was incorrect and the date given for the first class was wrong. My
son's instructor did not show up at all for the first class and was replaced,
but this set everything back by a week. I had paid for two private tutoring
sessions for my son, but between the scheduling issue and the tutor having very
little availability, he ended up getting only one session. Contact with
Revolution was always confusing; we would get phone calls and emails with
incorrect information; everyone was very nice but very confused. They need to
   get their act together.

Do a search on College Confidential for Revolution Prep for more opinions. The
complaints there seem to be that the course moves too slowly for high-achieving
students (this was my daughter's opinion as well) and that the practice tests
are rigged, with the initial practice tests much easier than subsequent practice
tests, so that it always looks like the kid is improving.

I think the main value of these courses is that they force the kid to sit and
take a full SAT half-a-dozen times. If you have the kind of child who will
really and truly do this on his or her own, you can probably save yourself a few
   hundred dollars.

The other thing that was useful was that they teach a formula for writing the
essays. It's stupid, but the kids have to play this game, unfortunately.

At the end of the day, I was happy with my kids' SAT scores, so to me it was
   worth the money.

_______________

Revolution must have some sort of arrangement with the DOE, because they
marketed their service through both Murrow and Midwood high schools (where my 2
sons went). My youngest, now a senior at Midwood, took the course and got a
lot out of it. His SAT's went way up. He really liked his instructor (a
critical factor in getting a teen to focus). But I don't know if it is better
than Kaplan or Princeton.

__________

We used Everest Tutoring located right on Mantague St in the Heights. Justin was great for our daughter especially in math. I intend on using him when the time comes for my son.

If you are looking for an SAT tutor, I highly recommend Jeremy Tillman for individual tutoring who is tutoring my daughter at the moment. She is getting confident and is learning a lot from him. He has degrees from Princeton and Stanford. He will come to your house in Brooklyn and his rates are very reasonable.

______________

We had remarkable results with a tutor named Bailey Irwin. Really spectacular. My son was working with another tutor and doing ok, but his scores hit a plateau and were 'stuck'. Bailey came in and worked with him and his final scores were: 800, 800, 780. It was incredible. Nobody expected such great scores. Bailey has been doing this for many years. He started, years ago, with Princeton Review and ended up helping to write the exam with them. He has been on his own for a long time and has such excellent technique. He truly finds what each student needs individually. After my son's results, many of his friends and other parents hired him and also had incredible results. Recently a Mom told me that he found a learning issue in her daughter that nobody else (including teachers) noticed, but she suspected. And he daughter now has extended time for the exam.
I can't say enough great things about Bailey. He only charges $130/hr. Which is an incredible deal for his ability, dedication and experience. You can reach him at:
