Suraj is an excellent tutor; my kid felt he explained Algebra and Chemistry very clearly, so that she really understood the concepts on top of getting the work done. I appreciated that he checked for understanding before moving onto the next thing. He is an exceptionally nice guy who really understands how to teach the subject matter. He is a former DOE math teacher and special education teacher, and taught coding the last 4 years of his teaching career.
Would you recommend this tutor to other parents for their children?yes
For us, tutoring only works if it's a good fit between tutor and kid, and the kid buys into it. If the kid is resistant it's not going to be of much use. And if the fit isn't right, look for someone else. We had a couple different tutors before finding Suraj.
What subject(s) does he/she tutor? SHSAT prep
This is our first time working with a tutor and even though we're in the early stages, my daughter is having a great experience with SHSAT prep. Boost Tutors and Mentors assigned Canning for my daughter. She lives relatively close by and is able to meet in person. She goes to both my house and my daughter's father's house for sessions. She makes learning strategies for the SHSAT fun. Boost Tutors sends a report after each session so I can stay on top of what's going on and know where my daughter's strengths and challenges are. They're approach to test prep is healthy. There is no stress for anyone, my daughter included.
Would you recommend this tutor to other parents for their children? Absolutely
What is the ONE piece of advice you would give people :
If you go through a company like Boost Tutors talk with them about your child's learning style and personality so they can match your child with the right tutor. The child will be the one spending most of their time with that person so you want yo make sure they're right for your child.

My son loved working with Suraj in science so much we eventually started using him for math as well. My son said he explained things clearly and often offered more than one method for solving problems or remembering complex concepts. Unlike many tutors who simply go through current school work/homework, Suraj is very efficient with his sessions and approaches them ore like a teacher giving mini lessons followed by his own exercises or using the students homework to ensure comprehension. Suraj has also always been very responsive and adapts quickly to the students needs (ie. needing extra sessions or intense focus for upcoming exams, etc.). Suraj's background as a teacher and working with Special Ed kids really makes him an excellent tutor for kids with learning issues, slow processiing speed, etc.

Listen to a session to see if the tutor actually re-teaching concepts and strategies (and ensuring comprehension) so your student can success at school NOT just providing 'homework help.'

Blake helped our student pull up their Advanced Precalculus grade mid-year, which I think included reinforcing some trig skills they missed from the prior year. In addition to the student's homework and test review materials, Blake uses engaging outside materials and develops his own additional work based on the student's course progression. He is very patient, quiet, kind and thoughtful. He was a good fit for my serious math student, but I would use him for their sibling (who is a less focused student) if the need arose, and he would also fit well with more introverted or math-shy students. This was our second attempt at a tutor; our student found Blake to be more targeted to the work in her particular precalculus course and to have more helpful strategies. Blake was very accommodating with rescheduling around sports and other commitments, and he offered very substantive progress reports after each session.

Give serious consideration to logistics. We found that the tutor's ability to come to our home, and their flexibility around other commitments made a big difference in our student's perception that tutoring was aligned with their overall goals.

Julie was awesome in working with all three of our kids: 2 for SHSAT and 1 for ACT. She really connected with them and helped them reach the scores they needed. We have been hearing about Julie since our kids were in elementary school, and now I understand why. I feel lucky that we have such a great resource in the neighborhood. We have worked with many math tutors and Julie is a dream: focused, warm, kind, able to adapt to our child’s learning needs and highly communicative with the parents. Some tutors are clearly cramming your child in on the side and it shows. Julie was just what my son needed! We were targeting specific math skills for the SAT, so we didn't think a class would be efficient. Julie was able to work with him to not only help with his math skills, but also his test-taking strategies and, most of all, his confidence. She understood his brain and how he learns and was able to very quickly find a way to reach him. It was extremely effective. His math score went up tremendously -- more than 100 points. That put him in the spot he wanted to be in for college. He only had to take the test once, and was done.

After the first meeting, my son looked at me and said, "wow. She really gets me." She worked twice a week with my son over several months to improve his score on the ACT. During these sessions, they worked on a range of things including test strategy, how to read / interpret English and reading passages, how to solve math problems, and so on. She was a patient cheerleader as he struggled through developing confidence to overcome his challenges, and showed him how to navigate being a test taker with additional challenges. Heck, he scored a 35 in the reading section and said it wouldn’t have happened without her! And many of the lessons that she taught him have continue to help him improve the way he addresses other tests and assignments.

There has to be chemistry and understanding between the tutor and the tutored. But first, the one receiving the tutoring has to want to do the work. It's not up a tutor to cajole a student into working, but sometimes a tutor knows how to make the tutoring sessions that much more interesting. Those tutors are worth their weight in gold!

Money is definitely their focus. We found the tutor curiously passive - “when do you want me to give a practice test?” - and she evidently had not read my email explaining our goals so I had to explain everything again at first in-person meeting; and even getting her to contact me to make that happen was an issue. Identical homework assigned more than once, by some oversight. Unhelpful summaries after class. I finally cut my losses and canceled. The company responded by letting me know they’d be happy to take more money from me via other tutoring. Didn’t ask what went wrong with Isis.

Our family used Bee Tutored in a number of capacities and had great experiences in all. We did group classes in their office, online mock tests, and one-on-one tutoring in our home with two different tutors. All the tutors and teachers we worked with were great. The private work was the most productive and expensive but we were really happy with it. Test scores rose and anxiety about subjects decreased. Communication from the tutors is also incredible. In private work, they follow up with notes to parents after each session listing what was covered and what is homework. In group classes, they use Google classroom. Mock test results came back very quickly with good analysis of performance in different subject areas. The administration is also great. They are responsive to calls and questions and they talked us through which of their offerings would work best for each our kids (they had very different needs and starting points).

I think, depending on the need of your child and your financial situation, if you have the ability to work in a private one-on-one situation, take it. It does cost more but you will get more out of it and maybe not have to do it for so long.

To say PLEASED tutoring has changed our lives does not do justice to its impact. At least twice a year, I contact Lara, crying with tears of gratitude. My daughter was a toddler who loved books and wanted to start reading early. She became a Kinder/1st grader who would tantrum anytime reading was mentioned. I knew I needed help. We learned that she has dyslexia and was almost 2 grade levels behind. She is now a 5th grader who must be told to stop reading! Lara's expertise, enthusiasm, and ingenious ways of incorporating my daughter's interests have changed our lives forever. What the children learn about themselves makes PLEASED different and genuinely life-changing. My daughter learned that she is dyslexic, not dumb. Lara's impact on my daughter's self-esteem is just as (if not more) important than her academic progress.

Really think about what type of learner your child is and find a tutor who is a good fit. Don't try to fit your child to the tutor, fit the tutor to your child. Also, a good tutor should be able to adapt easily to your child's level and capacity once they've gotten to know each other. A rigid tutor without the ability to adapt is not the way to go.

Please write a full review of your experience as a parent : Jared worked for EBL coaching in NYC for 7 years prior to establishing his own private tutoring business, which he's been running for the past 10 years. Jared is experienced in engaging students who are struggling with Dyslexia, Dysgraphia and or ADHD, and who are also experiencing a bit of reluctance (anxiety) around doing homework. He worked with our son throughout middle school. Most notably, Jared creates a positive and relaxed learning environment in his sessions. He reviews key concepts and teaches how to break things down into manageable steps, before embarking on completing homework assignments.
Would you recommend this tutor to other parents for their children? Yes
What is the ONE piece of advice you would give people : Make sure the tutor can easily get to your home if doing in person. Develop an understanding of what your child's particular challenges are and communicate them to tutor. Encourage your child to do the same. Watch/listen to a session.
