PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Summer Arts Institute is a tuition-free, intensive, four-week arts program for New York City public school students entering grades 8-12, held at Frank Sinatra School of the Arts High School in Astoria, Queens.

Students major in dance, theater, vocal music, instrumental music, visual art, film or photography. The program is designed for students at an intermediate or advanced level of study in their chosen art form.

Summer Arts Institute offers a unique opportunity for students to work with master Department of Education arts specialists, partnering cultural organizations, and guest artists. The experienced staff of teachers and artists guides students in building a portfolio or audition skills for the next level of their studies: a specialized high school, college, university or conservatory.

Summer Arts Institute focuses on three areas:
- developing students' artistic skills and creativity;
- broadening students' awareness of the arts and;
- helping students recognize and explore career options in the art and arts-related industries.

This intensive summer arts experience connects students to community and cultural resources along with access to careers and lifelong learning in the arts.

The daily schedule includes morning studio work and afternoon experiences with professional artists, on-site and off. In the morning studios, students work at developing and improving their technical skills and creative expression in their selected art form. Afternoons are dedicated to rehearsals, attending professional performances, visiting professional arts venues and exploring potential careers. The Institute culminates with a student visual art and photography exhibit and live performance for families and the local community.

Students who complete the program in good standing are eligible to receive a ½ unit of credit that may be applied towards an elective arts credit or a Regents or local diploma-major sequence upon approval from their school.

Brooklyn DA Track Program - What is it? Presentation & Q&A

  • Host:
    Parents of NY Teens

On January 11th, Parents of NY Teens invites you to an overview of the TRACK program presented by the Brooklyn DA's office.  If you are interested in attending. let me know at parentsofnyteens@gmail.com

 TRUANCY PROGRAM
In response to the well documented linkage between juvenile delinquency, day time crime and youth victimization, District Attorney Charles J. Hynes is New York City’s first DA to comprehensively address these issues by formulating an innovative program specifically designed to combat truancy.
In April of 1998, District Attorney Charles J. Hynes started the Truancy Reduction Alliance to Contact Kids, commonly known as the TRACK Program.  The TRACKProgram is a collaborative partnership between District Attorney Charles J. Hynes and the New York City Police Department, the New York City Department of Education, as well as a wide spectrum of community based organizations, houses of faith, and a wide array of New York City agencies.
District Attorney Charles J. Hynes recognizes that truancy is a public safety issue. Mr. Hynes states, “Young people limit their opportunities because of mistakes in judgment or [because of] a lack of education.”  He continues by saying, “Some become parents at an early age, [while] others fall into a life involving crime.  A truancy program teaming parents, students, schools, police, prosecutors and community services can make a difference.”
 HOW IT WORKS
The TRACK Program operates out of seven TRACK Centers located throughout Brooklyn.  Centers are operational between the hours of 9:30 AM and 2 PM on days when school is in session.  If a child is not in school between the hours of 9 AM and 12 PM, Case Law allows an Officer to stop the student and ask the student about his/her destination.  If an Officer determines that the child is truant, the Officer must escort the student to the nearest TRACKCenter.  This is done for the purpose of the student’s safety.
When the student arrives at a TRACK Center, the following takes place:
  1. A Police Officer obtains the student’s pertinent contactinformation and contacts the student’s parent and/or guardian.  Parents are told to come to the Center, meet with a social worker, if they wish, and return their children to school.  Last year, 85% of the parents picked up their children and returned them to school.

  2. An Educational Specialist, employed by New York City’s Department of Education, verifies that the student is enrolled in school and enrolls any child who is not.

  1. School Safety Agents, employed by the New York City Police Department, maintain order and safety at the Center; and return children back to school in the event that a parent is unable to.

Tip With Confidence: The PSP Holiday Tips Survey

Thanks to EVERYONE who filled out the survey for Holiday Tips and Bonuses.

Here are our Key findings:

For parents with kids either in school or employing a Nanny, year-end tips/bonuses add up to more than the average New Yorker pays. For families with a full-time nanny, a kid in preschool or K-12, living in a doorman building with a housecleaner, a car in a local parking garage, and sporting a dog walker and personal trainer, paying the average amount of year-end tips/bonuses could put them back $1,200 (the bulk of that going to the Nanny) or more.

Overall, those most likely to get tipped this year are the Nannies (92% will tip), Superintendents (90%), Housecleaners (85%), and Daycare/Preschool teachers (75% will tip). Low on the tipping list is the mail carrier (23%) and personal trainers (13%).

And what about the economy’s impact on giving? Not much change from last year, with 86% paying the same amount this year than last, 6% saying they are paying more, and 8% saying less.

Here’s the full survey: Holiday Tips

Thanks to Lisa, Melissa, and Alina for their help on the survey!
