Applications for New York City’s Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) Available Beginning Monday, March 3

City residents ages 14-24 have until Friday, April 25 to apply for lottery

New York, NY – New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) Commissioner Bill Chong announced that DYCD will accept applications for the 2014 Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) from Monday, March 3 through Friday, April 25, 2014. SYEP, the nation’s largest summer youth employment initiative, provides New York City young people between the ages of 14 and 24 with up to six weeks of entry-level experience at worksites in all five boroughs. The application does not guarantee placement; participants are selected by lottery for the program.

Youth can apply online or at a participating community-based organization during the application period. Online applications are available at the DYCD website (www.nyc.gov/dycd), or call DYCD Youth Connect at 1-800-246-4646 or 311 for more information. Updates will also be posted to DYCD’s Facebook (www.facebook.com/nycyouth) and Twitter (www.twitter.com/nycyouth) sites.

SYEP participants are paid minimum wage to work at thousands of diverse worksites, including government agencies, hospitals, summer camps, nonprofits, small businesses, law firms, museums, sports enterprises and retail. SYEP also provides workshops on job readiness, career exploration and financial literacy, and opportunities to continue education and social growth. Specialized programming for disabled, foster care, runaway/homeless and court-involved young people are also available. Ladders for Leaders is an employer-paid internship component of SYEP for youth aged 16-24.

Last year, nearly 36,000 young New Yorkers were employed at more than 6,800 worksites during July and August, and assisted in the cleanup and recovery from Superstorm Sandy.

Get in the Game: Learn How To Be a Player in the Real World

Community Board 14 is hosting its 4th Annual Youth Conference on Thursday, April 28, from 4 to 7pm at the Brooklyn College Student Center (East 27th Street and Campus Road).

Many City agencies, local businesses, and organizations are participating in this year’s conference, whose theme is “Get in the Game: Learn How To Be a Player in the Real World,” to help provide teenagers between the ages of 12 and 19 with job, internship, and volunteer opportunities as well as after-school and summer activities. Breakout sessions and workshops will also be conducted.

The Way to Work (Formerly known as Vocational Foundation Inc. (VFI))

Our Program

The Way to Work was launched in 1936 (formerly known as VFI) by an ambitious lawyer looking to help young men leaving prison get the basic skills they needed to get a GED, land a job and transition into becoming productive members of society.

Today, The Way to Work is one of the most successful youth workforce development programs in the nation, with more than 82% of clients retaining their jobs after a full year of employment.

How to Enroll

Take charge of your future!

If you are between the ages of 17 and 24 and interested in job training, check out The Way to Work!

Walk-ins are welcome every Monday through Friday at 9am. You will learn more about our programs and your reading and math skills will be evaluated in an entrance exam (TABE Test).

Clients should be prepared to be at The Way to Work’s offices for a few hours. Be sure to arrange for child care, there are no child care facilities on site. You do not need to bring your parents.

Interview process: if applicants score the grade level required for The Way to Work programs they will be invited back to meet with staff for an interview. After the interview applicants will be notified by the recruitment department of their status in the program. This process may take several days depending on scheduling

You will need to bring specific documents when you apply. Please come see us even If you do not have all of the following documents ready:

• Proof of Employment Eligibility/Citizenship: Birth Certificate , U.S. Passport, Resident Alien Card, Naturalization Certificate
• Social Security Card
• Economic Eligibility (bring in one of the following: legal guardian’s pay stub, letter of support, public assistance budget/letter with ID, SSI Award Letter, Student Pay or Unemployment Check Stub
• Proof of Address (bring in one of the following: Lease, utility bill, computer printout of government agency, State ID.)
• Additional Documents include immunization records, proof of PPD tests and school transcripts

Jobs for Teens

We are currently recruiting for the spring session of This Way Ahead In School Youth Program. Our next cycle starts February 2010. Young people will have an opportunity to interview for a paid internship with Old Navy and GAP stores in different locations throughout the five boroughs. Please share this information with any youth in high school, GED classes or college and who is between the ages of 16 and 21.

* We are visiting High Schools, CBO’s and Social Service Agencies etc. If you have large groups of Young People (15 or more) that will be in one area at one time, we can schedule an info session (at your location. Please call to set up an appointment day and time.

*Young people must be able to function successfully in a spirited, fast paced, learning environment. They are expected to work in groups and autonomously, gaining knowledge in the areas of career and life skills as well as leadership. Students create their own schedules based on their need.

This program will include the following components:
* 2 hour Career and Life Skills weekly Workshops
* 2 hour Retail Supplement weekly Workshops with Gap Inc. management staff

The benefits of the program include:

*A chance to compete for 1 of 40 internship positions at Gap or Old Navy. Paying $8.75 an hour

*Bi-weekly they will be paid a modest stipend for completing 4 program hours per week

*Follow up services for 1 year after completing the internship!

*Please note, a Young person must be/ become a Door member to participate. No appointment necessary to become a member, come to 555 Broome Street Monday – Friday from 2pm – 5pm with extended hours on Wednesday until 7pm.
