Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls summer day camp is an intensive, six-day program featuring instrument instruction, workshops, songwriting/band practice, live performances by visiting artists, and a showcase concert. Campers receive two hours of instrument instruction each day in small groups organized by skill level and age. All classes are taught by volunteers. On the first day, campers form bands, and during daily band practice, campers write music and lyrics collectively, assisted by band coaches. Campers also attend workshops on topics ranging from songwriting to sound engineering to self-defense. At the end of the week, bands perform their original song at a showcase concert.

Hours: Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Saturday from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
The July Session final concert will be on Saturday, July 16, at a venue TBD.
→ AUGUST SESSION: Monday, August 22 – Saturday, August 27
Hours: Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Saturday from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
The August Session final concert will be on Saturday, August 27, at a venue TBD.
Please note that campers may not attend more than one session in the same summer and campers must be able to perform in the final showcase concert in order to attend camp.
WHERE
Urban Assembly School of Music & Art, in Downtown Brooklyn. The camp is located on the 7th and 8th floors of the multi-school building at 49 Flatbush Ave Extension. The building is wheelchair accessible. The closest trains are the A/C/F/R trains at Jay St–MetroTech.
IMPORTANT: PLEASE DO NOT call Urban Assembly School of Music and Art for information about camp and DO NOT SEND or DROP OFF any application materials at the school. Application materials sent to or dropped off at the school will not be considered.

WHO MAY APPLY FOR CAMP
Any girl who will be between the ages of 8 and 18 during the camp session may apply for camp. No experience is necessary and you don’t have to live in New York to apply (please see below for more information about out-of-town campers). Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls welcomes campers who self-identify as female, trans, and gender non-conforming.
Note: Campers must be at least 8 years old at the time of camp to attend. No exceptions will be made.
REDUCED TUITION/FINANCIAL AID
Reduced tuition is available for campers from low- and moderate-income households. Applications for reduced tuition should be included with your camp application materials and the same deadlines apply. See the application for more information.
SPECIAL SCHOLARSHIPS
We have several scholarship opportunities for prospective campers. These scholarships have been created by specific sponsors, and are separate from the reduced tuition application process. Please note: Scholarship applications should be included with your camp application materials and the same deadlines apply.

INSTRUMENT INSTRUCTION
You can choose to study guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, vocals, or DJ/turntables. Please check only ONE first choice and ONE second choice instrument on the application. If you would like to study a different instrument, like violin, horns, or reed instruments, please indicate that in the instrument section, and we will do our best to accommodate your request. Due to the need to acquire the gear we need in advance, you cannot change your selection after you send in your application, and you cannot change during the camp session.
APPLICATION/EXPRESS YOURSELF
In addition to the basic camper application, we ask that all prospective campers take some time to communicate why they want to be a part of Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls by creating an “Express Yourself” piece. Applicants may choose any format: a letter, a picture, a collage, a song or poem, etc. Please make sure the piece has the applicant’s FIRST AND LAST name on it! Please note that all submitted materials become property of Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls and cannot be returned.
CAMPER SELECTION/NOTIFICATION
Campers are selected by a committee seeking to establish a balanced and diverse camp population in relation to instrument groups, age, race/ethnicity, economic status, geography/community, and experience. Campers are not selected on a first-come, first-served basis. Please be aware that we make every effort to welcome back returning campers, but we cannot guarantee spots for returning campers. Applicants who were not admitted last summer will have high priority. Applicants who have attended camp for the past 3 years in a row may not be able to attend this summer, but will have higher priority the following summer.
Upon receipt of your application, we will send you a notice via email (or snail mail if an e-mail address is not provided) confirming that we have received it. If you have not received a notice within 3 weeks after you send in your application, call us at 347-599-0716. Please don’t call unless you haven’t received a confirmation and it has been a full three weeks since you sent in your application! Please note that we anticipate receiving many more applications than camper spots, so we will not be able to accept every girl who applies. We will mail out notifications to every applicant. Additional information about camp will be sent with acceptance letters.

ACCOMODATIONS FOR OUT OF TOWN CAMPERS
Willie Mae Rock Camp is a day camp and we do NOT provide lodging. We are able to offer limited assistance with host family arrangements. If you are interested in contacting a prospective host family, or if you are a local family interested in hosting a camper, please let us know on your application.
IMPORTANT DATES
In an effort to help families plan their summers and still extend the opportunity to as many girls as possible, we will be doing two rounds of application review. If you are not accepted in the Early Bird Round, your application will be reconsidered during the General Round. Applications for both summer sessions will be reviewed in both rounds.
