Three-year Art and Design Scholarship Program

Fall 2016 Sophomores apply by June 1

Dear parents,

We are now accepting applications for the next class of Pratt Young Scholars!

This is a great opportunity for students to learn more about art and design, meet other students with similar interests, and prepare for college in a creative environment! To apply, students must be entering the 10th grade this fall.

Pratt Young Scholars is a need-based, three-year scholarship providing instruction in art and design with college preparation to motivated high school students. This Scholarship, valued at $6300, covers three years of studio instruction, all art materials for courses taken, college access program, SAT prep course in July, and guidance through the college application process.

Classes meet: Wednesdays, 5 - 7pm, and on Saturdays, 10am – 1:30pm, from October 1 – April 22nd. Summer Schedule: 2-4 week session in July

Students entering 10th grade in the 2016-2017 school year are eligible to apply if they:

• Demonstrate an interest in art and design
• Display academic merit (above a C average)
• Commit to attending classes on Wednesdays after school and Saturdays for three years (no exceptions), as well as July summer programs
• Attend a New York City public school
• Meet the income eligibility guidelines

Posse Foundation Scholarship Interest Meeting

Scholarship Opportunity for High School Juniors

The Richard and Mica Hadar Foundation, established in 1993, offers college scholarships to high school students who demonstrate talent in any of the creative arts. 

By providing scholarships, seminars and a mentoring program, the foundation supports young scholars who might not otherwise be able to attend college. The scholarship amount varies depending on financial need.

We invite you to nominate students for our 2015 Class by May 15, 2014.

WE ARE ONLY LOOKING FOR JUNIORS—meaning, we are asking you to nominate students who are currently juniors in their spring semester. These students will then be seniors in September 2014.

We have created an ONLINE NOMINATION PORTAL atwww.hadarfoundation.org where you can nominate students. You will be receiving the username and password to this portal this week in a separate email. Once you have received your username and password, please go towww.hadarfoundation.org and enter it in the upper right hand corner; on the bottom of the screen the nominator forms will appear. Please fill out one nomination form per student. All nominator forms must be submitted digitally by May 15, 2014 through this new submission process. Once you have submitted your nomination per student, that student will receive a username and password on the Hadar Foundation website to submit their application which is due by June 30, 2014. We’ve gone completely digital!

The selection criteria for the scholarship is:

· FINANCIAL NEED: Students who do not have the satisfactory means to attend college may apply. Please email our Finance Director, Ann Feminella with any questions about financial aid: ann@hadarfoundation.org.

· RESPONSIBLE/INTELLIGENT & INTERESTING STUDENTS: Students who have passed all their regents and who have a good high school transcript along with a demonstrated interest in their particular creative discipline.

· DEMONSTRATED TALENT IN EITHER THE PERFORMING, LITERARY, OR THE VISUAL ARTS: Students must be proficient in their art discipline—i.e. if they want to be an actor; they must be working toward that goal in school/out-of-school time. No samples of work needed except from writers; writers must submit up to 5 pages. We are counting on the nominators to select the most talented students.

Scholarship opportunity for graduates of public schools in the Bronx!

The Seinfeld Scholarship Program awards high school students who have achieved
academic excellence and committed themselves to community service.

Inspired to give back to the city they love, Jerry Seinfeld and his family
established The Seinfeld Scholarship Program in 2000. Since its inception, the
scholarship program has provided college scholarships to more than 190 public
school students throughout New York City.

Seinfeld Scholars receive a four-year scholarship to the college or university
of the student's choice. The Seinfeld Scholarship Program will cover up to
$10,000 of any unmet need the students have, including books, room and board,
tuition, etc. Recipients are also given personal support throughout the year, as
well as access to college prep programs, mentoring and service opportunities.

The program operates on a rotating basis. Each year, scholarships are awarded to
students who attend public schools in a specified borough of New York City.
Applicants for the 2012 program must be graduating in June 2012 from a New York
City public high school in the BRONX.

Scholarships, Robotics & Career Exp, Free SAT Prep, & Contests

NYC FIRST Robotics and Career Expo
Educators, students, and parents are invited to attend the 2010 New York City FIRST Robotics Competition being held at the Jacob Javits Center on March 13-14. More than 200 student robotics teams will be competing. There will also be a Science and Technology Career Expo, including 30 colleges and universities offering FIRST scholarships and some of New York City’s largest technology based companies. Enter Citywide Graphic Arts Competition
The 9th Annual Citywide Graphic Arts Competition will be held this spring to showcase the talent and creative energy of high school students enrolled in graphics education programs. The categories for this year’s competition are: Powerpoint Presentation, Desktop Publishing and Design, Web Site Design, Offset Printing, Digital Photography, Digital Video and Student Filmmaking (new category). High schools are hosting qualifying rounds through March. Schools will submit the top student work from each category electronically by April 2 to be considered for the citywide finals. Students may compete in multiple categories at the Qualifying Rounds. Student finalists will be selected by industry and academic experts to compete in the Citywide Finals in May at the New York City College of Technology in Brooklyn. Each of the invited finalists will compete in one of the categories for prizes at the citywide final competition. Finalists in Student Filmmaking will compete in an on-site Digital Video Production. 2010 New York City Water Resources Art & Poetry Contest
The New York City Department of Environmental Protection is pleased to announce the 24th annual Water Resources Art & Poetry Contest. New York City students in the fourth, fifth and sixth grade are encouraged to create art and compose poetry that reflects an appreciation for New York City's water supply, our wastewater treatment system, and the importance of water conservation. All winners will be honored at a special award ceremony in the month of May. See entries from previous years and contest guidelines. Free Online SAT Preparation for Eleventh Grade Students
Eleventh grade students can use an online program to prepare for the spring 2010 SAT examination through a partnership with The College Board. The online tool can be used by individual students through any computer with internet access, or it can be integrated into classroom instruction. The College Board will send welcome packets to high schools this week with starter guides and registration cards for students, teachers, and administrators. The Forest Project Summer Collaborative

Wave Hill is recruiting high school sophomores, juniors and seniors from the Bronx and upper Manhattan for a paid summer internship. This six week summer internship program uses Bronx natural areas for ecological study and job training. Earning wages from Wave Hill and college credits from CUNY's Lehman College, basic forest restoration is taught in the greater context of the urban ecosystem, where woodland management connects directly with air and water quality, wildlife habitat and biodiversity.

Three levels of internships are offered based on experience and high school grade completed, encouraging teenagers to grow at Wave Hill by returning each summer for new and increasingly challenging experiences. Diverse Minds Youth Writing Challenge and Scholarship Opportunity
High school students are invited to write and illustrate a children's book that discusses the topics of tolerance and diversity. Submissions should provide a story that children (in grades K-5) can understand and identify with that also promotes a greater understanding of different cultures, lifestyles, and beliefs. Students may work individually or as a team (of up to four members). Each book should consist of a complete story with full-color illustrations, and be submitted on 8.5" x 11" sheets of paper with text and art on each page (all media accepted). Entries may be no longer than 24 pages. Winners will receive college scholarships and the first prize winner’s book will be published. Submissions must be received or postmarked by March 8. Math and Science College Scholarships
Named for the first African American to walk in space, a new scholarship is available to encourage minority students to pursue college degrees and careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Math and Science Scholarships are for this year's graduating high school seniors. Four scholarships for two males and two females of $5,000 each will be awarded to two African American and two Hispanic students on behalf of the former astronaut, physician and businessman. Applications are due May 14.
