Will the New Application Process Help or Hurt NYC Students?

REGISTER HERE The federal government’s notoriously complicated financial aid process may become simpler for students beginning this fall with a new rule allowing families to use tax information they have in hand from the “prior, prior” year’s returns.  The hope is that the government’s FAFSA form will be easier to fill out on-line using existing tax data from the IRS. And students can apply for aid as early as October, allowing colleges to speed up financial aid offers.  But many are worried about what this change will bring in New York. Students may have to apply for financial aid at the same time they are applying for colleges, doubling the college application work that must be done in the fall. And New York State hasn’t moved to bring its financial aid process in line with the feds, potentially leaving students to face a dizzying array of conflicting aid application rules. Please join us for a discussion of what the new financial aid rules will bring—and what else we can be doing to make the process easier on low-income families and first-generation college students. American Museum of Natural History College Fair & Seminar on College App & Financial Aid Processes

The Museum invites all NYC high school students to its Annual College Fair.

This year's College Fair is on Friday, October 25th from 5:30 – 7:30

FREE! Open to the public.

This year we are excited to offer a free Kaplan seminar on the college application and financial aid processes with 
a Q & A session before the College Fair from 4:45-5:30pm located in the Kaufmann Theater.

Location: North Gallery, American Museum of Natural History, Enterthrough the 77th st entrance, which is located on 77th Street between and Columbus Avenue and Central Park West.

Directions: To get to the Museum by subway take the B or C train to 81st Street. Two blocks west of the Museum, the 1 train stops at Broadway and West 79th Street. To get to the Museum by bus take the M79 bus traveling east/west on West 79th Street across Central Park, with a stop next to the Museum on West 81st Street. Options College Counseling

Goddard Riverside’s Options Center shows New York City students they can go to college and guides them through the steps to enrollment. Any student with passing grades, a high school diploma or GED, and the desire should have the opportunity to go to college; that is what Options is about.
Students from low-income and working-class backgrounds face significant barriers to achieving a college degree – now considered essential for most career paths. College costs are soaring, aid is decreasing, and counselors at New York City schools frequently have caseloads of 500 or more students.

Options makes college more accessible to students through these free services:

• One-to-one educational counseling for 11th and 12th graders;
• Assistance with admissions and financial aid applications, essays, portfolios, and scholarship and internship opportunities;
• A resource center with up-to-date materials and internet access;
• Visits to college campuses and contact with Options Center alumni on campus;
• SAT preparation;
• Workshops on the transition from high school to college;
• Short-term mental health counseling to students, parents and families by a licensed professional on staff at OPTIONS;
• Early Awareness programming for middle and high school students;

Every year Options serves over 1,000 students and their families from all over New York City and sends 200 graduates to college, the majority of whom are the first in their family to attend.
Over 5,000 youth and adults have gone to college with the help of the Options Center. As one program alumni, now a college graduate, recently put it, “Options broadened my sense of what was possible – and even when I thought I couldn’t do it, my counselor helped me every step of the way.”
Through the Options Center, Goddard Riverside is a leader in the college access movement. We offer training and professional development programs for other youth-serving agencies and college counseling professionals.

SUNY Financial Aid Workshops in NYC

Prospective students and families are invited to attend a workshop which will provide detailed information about the financial aid application and award process.  This workshop will help you become familiar with the terminology associated with financial aid and the variety of resources that are available.

Free Financial Aid Workshop

On the 25th workshops will be offered at 12:00pm, 1:00pm, 2:00pm and 3:00pm.

Additional Free CUNY Financial Aid Workshops for prospective students will be hosted throughout November, in concurrence with CUNY Month, at various colleges across the city. Over 65,000 students are invited to attend these workshops each year. We are planning to hold at least one workshop in each borough. If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact us.
