American Association on Health & Disability (AAHD) Scholarship In 2009, AAHD created the AAHD Scholarship Program, which will support students with disabilities who are pursuing higher education. Preference will be given to students who plan to pursue undergraduate/ graduate studies in the field of public health, health promotion, disability studies, to include disability policy and disability research. Royalties from the DHJ will fund the first year of the AAHD Scholarship Fund. As 2009 is the first year of the scholarship program, funds are limited and it is anticipated that scholarships will be competitive. Scholarships will be limited to under $1,000. The 2010-2011 Anne Ford and Allegra Ford Scholarship Award for Students with a Learning Disability The Anne Ford and Allegra Ford Scholarship offers a $10,000 award to two graduating high school seniors with documented learning disabilities (LD) who are pursuing undergraduate degrees. The ideal candidates are high school seniors who have faced the challenges of having a learning disability; are committed to completing a college degree and setting career goals; have demonstrated perseverance; embrace new opportunities; have a well-rounded perspective shaped by experiences in school, in the community, and with family and friends; understand how LD affects their life and recognize the importance of self-advocacy; believe in contributing to society in ways that increases opportunities for individuals with learning disabilities; and will feel comfortable serving as role models for others who struggle with LD. NYC Ladders for Leaders

NYC Ladders for Leaders is an innovative program that offers high school and college students the opportunity to participate in summer internships with some of the most dynamic corporations and businesses in New York City. Participants receive pre-employment training before starting their seven-week summer internships, and also attend regular workshops throughout the summer that focus on work readiness, college orientation, health, and leadership development. NYC Ladders for Leaders is a partnership between DYCD and the Commission on Women's Issues.

hat is NYC Ladders for Leaders?
NYC Ladders for Leaders is a college and career readiness program offering New York City high school and college students professional paid summer internships, college scholarship opportunities, free college preparatory and SAT courses, career guidance, and leadership development workshops.

Launched by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, NYC Ladders for Leaders is a joint program of the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) and the NYC Commission on Women’s Issues (CWI).

Who can apply?
Anyone with prior work experience (paid or volunteer) who is:

• A permanent resident of one of the five boroughs of New York City
• 16 to 21 years of age
• A current high school junior, high school senior, college freshman, or college sophomore
• Legally allowed to work in New York

Please Note: Alumni of the NYC Ladders for Leaders program (or its parent programs NYC GirlsREACH and BoysREACH and CAPITAL) are not eligible to apply for the 2011 program.

What is the application process?
There are three phases to the application process.

1. Application
2. Pre-Employment workshops and mock-interviews
3. Interviews with Potential Employers

Participants selected into the program must complete each of the three phases. Failure to complete or attend mandatory program events will result in dismissal from the program.

How do I apply?
Applicants must:
1. Complete all sections of the online application form. This includes:

• Responding to each mandatory essay question in the corresponding text box;
• Providing your resume in the appropriate text box. Resume should include any of your previous and current jobs, internships, leadership roles, volunteer commitments, extracurricular activities, and club involvement;
• Agreeing to the NYC Ladders for Leaders guidelines (if under 18, must be agreed to and signed by a parent or guardian as well);
• Listing your official scores from any college entrance exams you have taken (such as PSAT, SAT, SAT subject tests, or ACT);
• Listing a valid email address that you check frequently. If you do not have an email address, you can create a free email account at various web hosts including but not limited to www.yahoo.com; www.hotmail.com; www.aol.com; www.gmail.com; etc. (Note – all program communication, including invitations to mandatory program events, will be sent by email only); and
• If you attend Boarding School or College/University located outside of NYC, providing a copy of your School Calendar (including winter and spring breaks, last day of classes and last day of final exams).

2. Mail a copy of your most recent semester report card or college transcript. If you are a college freshman, please mail your last high school report card along with proof of college enrollment (i.e. class schedule) to below address.

3. Complete and mail required applicant recommendation form (must be completed by a referring community based organization, teacher, guidance counselor, past or present employer) to the address below.Click PDF link for Applicant Recommendation Form.

*If you are unable to complete the online application, you may obtain a paper version of the application by emailing NYCLaddersforLeaders@dycd.nyc.gov or calling (800) 246-4646. Return your completed application to the address below.

When is the deadline to submit my application? 
Applicants must submit copies of report cards or college transcripts, proof of college enrollment (if applicable), and recommendation form to the address noted below, along with their completed applications online or postmarked NO LATER THAN 11:59 p.m. (EST) on Monday, December 6th, 2010 to:

What happens after I submit my application?
All applications will be reviewed for eligibility. Those accepted into the program will be contacted by email to attend the pre-employment program. YOU MUST attend all pre-employment events in order to be referred to a partnering company for an interview for a possible internship. Please keep in mind that submission of an application does not guarantee acceptance into the NYC Ladders for Leaders program or placement in a summer internship position.

• Review your application to make sure the information printed on it is accurate and complete.
• Meet with your counselor to review your choices.
• Make a copy of your application before you hand it in.
• Hand in your application, with all necessary signatures included.
• Get an application receipt from your counselor.
• Review all information on the application receipt.
• If you need to make adjustments, inform your counselor immediately.

PHOTOGRAPHY EN ROUTE - Photography Contest for Teens

The Whitney Museum of American Art is thrilled to announce… PHOTOGRAPHY EN ROUTE An Online Teen Photography Contest Inspired by Lee Friedlander: America By Car  Master American photographer Lee Friedlander spent a decade exploring the United States in ordinary rental cars, capturing the unique American landscape in a fascinating series of photographs on view at the Whitney in the exhibition America By Car . Now, Youth Insights Leaders invite you to share your own photographs of America, taken from any form of transportation—car, subway, bus, boat, bicycle, you name it! The Photography En Route contest is open to teens ages 13-19 anywhere in the United States.  Submit your best shot by November 27, 2010 to be eligible to win a brand new Nikon Coolpix L110 digital camera and to have your photograph featured on the Whitney’s website. TO ENTER Email submissions to youthinsights@whitney.org. Photographs should be in jpg format with a maximum file size of 2MB. In the body of your email, please include your full name, age, school, home address, email, phone, and the form of transportation in photograph.
