Applications Due on December 17

 

The deadline to submit completed middle school applications to counselors is this Friday, December 17. If you haven't submitted an application yet, be sure to contact your guidance counselor or parent coordinator this week. If your child attends a private or parochial school, please contact a borough enrollment office with any questions.

High School Admissions Update

 

High School Applications

By now, all eighth grade students should have submitted a high school application to their school guidance counselor. If you did not get an application receipt from your public school counselor, please ask for one this week. Private and parochial school students should request a receipt ("Data Verification Form") from their school during the first week of January.

 

Specialized High School Results

Students who applied to one or more of the Specialized High Schools will receive the results from their school counselor in mid-February. Main round results will be distributed through school counselors at the end of March. Please continue to visit the High School Admissions Homepage for calendar updates and other information throughout the year.

Tip With Confidence: The PSP Holiday Tips Survey

 

Thanks to EVERYONE who filled out the survey for Holiday Tips and Bonuses.

Here are our Key findings:

For parents with kids either in school or employing a Nanny, year-end tips/bonuses add up to more than the average New Yorker pays. For families with a full-time nanny, a kid in preschool or K-12, living in a doorman building with a housecleaner, a car in a local parking garage, and sporting a dog walker and personal trainer, paying the average amount of year-end tips/bonuses could put them back $1,200 (the bulk of that going to the Nanny) or more. 

Overall, those most likely to get tipped this year are the Nannies (92% will tip), Superintendents (90%), Housecleaners (85%), and Daycare/Preschool teachers (75% will tip). Low on the tipping list is the mail carrier (23%) and personal trainers (13%).

And what about the economy’s impact on giving? Not much change from last year, with 86% paying the same amount this year than last, 6% saying they are paying more, and 8% saying less.

Scholarships for Teens with Disabilities

KASA (Kids as Self-Advocates) has compiled this list of available scholarships in their current member's newsletter. American Association on Health & Disability (AAHD) Scholarship In 2009, AAHD created the AAHD Scholarship Program, which will support students with disabilities who are pursuing higher education. Preference will be given to students who plan to pursue undergraduate/ graduate studies in the field of public health, health promotion, disability studies, to include disability policy and disability research. Royalties from the DHJ will fund the first year of the AAHD Scholarship Fund. As 2009 is the first year of the scholarship program, funds are limited and it is anticipated that scholarships will be competitive. Scholarships will be limited to under $1,000. Deadline to apply is: December 15, 2010. The ideal candidates are high school seniors who have faced the challenges of having a learning disability; are committed to completing a college degree and setting career goals; have demonstrated perseverance; embrace new opportunities; have a well-rounded perspective shaped by experiences in school, in the community, and with family and friends; understand how LD affects their life and recognize the importance of self-advocacy; believe in contributing to society in ways that increases opportunities for individuals with learning disabilities; and will feel comfortable serving as role models for others who struggle with LD.
