Art in Public Spaces” at MoMA

“Art in Public Spaces” at MoMA

Application Deadline: Apply ASAP
Calling all Juniors and Seniors
ART IN PUBLIC SPACES
FREE SUMMER WORKSHOP WITH THE MUSEUM of MODERN ART
AND THE FORT GREENE PARK CONSERVANCY
July 18, 22, 25, 29 from 10am-12.30pm (note it is a Monday/Friday schedule)
Lunch will be included.
Must attend all sessions.
Ever wonder how that piece of artwork got in the middle of the park or on that street corner?  Did the community ask for it?  Did the artist donate the work?  Who installed the work?  How did they get the go ahead?  Where did the money come from?
The Fort Greene Park Conservancy partners up with the Museum of Modern Art for a free outdoor public art project in Fort Greene Park. The workshop will begin to answer these questions and expose YOU to the breadth and depth of careers in the arts.  We will discuss ways contemporary artists use art to engage with a community and public space AND develop a final public art work that the class creates collectively.
There will be a field trip to MoMA in September where we’ll discuss the project, the museum’s collection and meet potential employers.  At this time you will receive a certificate of completion and any references requested.
There is a limited number of slots for this class. If you’d like to participate, you must attend all of the classes!
Download application here.
Please send your completed application to  Amanda@fortgreenepark.org.

Free Teen Journalism Workshop

Calling all aspiring journalists out there!
We know teenagers need a break after the hard slog of the school year, but we’re hoping that you’ve had enough relaxation, whether poolside or on the couch, and are ready to start telling some stories. The Local is holding a teen journalism workshop later this month  for high school students who are interested in learning more about reporting, blogging, news photography and shooting video.
This completely FREE three-day workshop will be held at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School from Monday July 25 to Wednesday July 27, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch will be provided. It will be an opportunity to pick up some great journalistic and multimedia skills, as well as a chance to produce blog posts for our website (which make great clips for aspiring writers and for college applications).
For examples of some of the posts produced by teens at last year’s workshop, click herehere or here. After the workshop, we hope you’ll become regular contributors to the blog!
You don’t have to live in the neighborhood to participate (though we strongly encourage locals to join us), but you must be able to get to Fort Greene and Clinton Hill regularly to report stories. We ask teen participants to commit to the three-day training on July 25, 26 and 27, followed by mentoring and editing from our news editors over the rest of the summer. Participants will receive a certificate once they complete the workshop.
To take advantage of this free summer journalism opportunity, email Indrani Sen, who is an editor at the Local, at indrani.sen@journalism.cuny.edu. Please spread the word!

In the second workshop, you'll use your draft from Workshop 1 as a starting point for an in-depth discussion of the Common Application Essay. Finally, at the third workshop, you'll learn strategies for revising and polishing your writing and then put them to practice by editing your essays from Workshops 1 or 2. You will emerge from the series with at least one polished draft that you can finalize and use for future applications. Please bring paper, pen/pencil, and your creativity!

This two hour talk will prepare you for the NY High School Fair and tours in the fall. The Dept. of Education has many good programs and publications, but this talk is from the point of view of a parent who has been there and understands what you need to know and why. I am currently developing a second session just for kids, to address their concerns and talk turkey about the specific schools. Watch this space.
  • I describe the process quickly and clearly without the deadly powerpoint used elsewhere.
  • This talk is designed for families of college bound students.
  • I give you a practical strategy to organized and manage the search.
  • I help you understand how to interpret the data that is available.
  • I give you resources to streamline your search.
  • I give you tough love and options.
  • I focus on what you need to know and when from a parent's point of view.
  • I give you a little advice on what the high school choice means for the college search.
I cover schools that would be a possible commute for students living in Brooklyn or Manhattan. Including Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens high schools.
$30 per person
