Thanks to everyone that came out last night to our first ever Parents of NY Teens support group ...
It was put together at the last possible minute and big thanks to Kim Maier from the Old Stone House for donating the space and to Mina for staying late to lock up.
We certainly had a wealth of ages (8-19) represented and issues to discuss and I think it was great for everyone to find out how common our issues truly are ...
Going forward, the space at the Old Stone House has been granted to us on the first Monday of the month.... Future dates are :

I'll post reminders to the board and continue to send Evites so we can keep track of RSVPs. All will be invited regardless of whether you've come before.
We discussed the possibility of hiring trained moderators on occasion as well as "experts in the field", so if you know of someone you'd like to hear from - whose information would be of interest to the Parents of Teens, let me know and I'm happy to approach them.
Additionally, the subject of breaking our group up into ages, sex, parent single/married status has come up and while we will continue to make the Old Stone House meetings general and open to all, I encourage anyone with the desire to be more specific to use the list to announce your suggestions, requests or offer to use your own space to meet.
This online group has been around since August, 2006 and we've grown to over 300 members. It's exciting for me to experience this new facet to the group.

Summer Arts Institute -- 2010
ANNOUNCING THE 2010 SUMMER ARTS INSTITUTE!
This summer the program will take place at Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in Astoria, Queens from July 6 through July 30, 2010. The film studio will extend through August 13, 2010.
Admission to the Summer Arts Institute is by application and audition. Applications must be received by Friday, February 26 at 5:00 p.m. Auditions will be held on Saturday, April 10 and Sunday, April 11, 2010 at Frank Sinatra School of the Arts.
Summer Arts Institute is open to all New York City Department of Education public school students entering grades 8 through 12 in the Fall of 2010. Only students currently enrolled or planning to attend a New York City Department of Education public school for the 2010-11 school year may apply. When necessary, public school enrollment will be verified to determine eligibility.

SUMMER ARTS INSTITUTE OVERVIEW
The Summer Arts Institute is a tuition-free, intensive, four-week arts program for New York City public school students entering grades 8-12, to be held at Frank Sinatra School of the Arts High School in Astoria, Queens. Students major in dance, theater, vocal music, instrumental music, visual art, film or photography. The program is designed for students at an intermediate or advanced level of study in their chosen art form. Summer Arts Institute offers a unique opportunity for students to work with master Department of Education arts specialists, partnering cultural organizations, and guest artists. The experienced staff of teachers and artists guides students in building a portfolio or audition skills for the next level of their studies: a specialized high school, college, university or conservatory.
Summer Arts Institute focuses on three areas:
- developing students' artistic skills and creativity;
- broadening students' awareness of the arts and;
- helping students recognize and explore career options in the art and arts-related industries.
This intensive summer arts experience connects students to community and cultural resources along with access to careers and lifelong learning in the arts.
The daily schedule includes morning studio work and afternoon experiences with professional artists, on-site and off. In the morning studios, students work at developing and improving their technical skills and creative expression in their selected art form. Afternoons are dedicated to rehearsals, attending professional performances, visiting professional arts venues and exploring potential careers. The Institute culminates with a student visual art and photography exhibit and live performance for families and the local community.
Students who complete the program in good standing are eligible to receive a ½ unit of credit that may be applied towards an elective arts credit or a Regents or local diploma-major sequence upon approval from their school.

Music Club is a program of Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls, a non-profit music and mentoring program. The mission of Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls is to empower girls and women through music education and activities that foster self-respect, leadership skills, creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration. The organization operates a summer day camp, after school programs, and community events in New York City.
Starting in January 2010, Music Club will meet weekly for three hours in the afternoon at Willie Mae Music Lab, Rock Camp's new community music center based at The Coop School in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn.
Tuesday Music Club will be for girls in grades 8 - 12 and Wednesday Music Club will be for girls in grades 3 - 7. Drop-off and pick-up times will be flexible to allow for different school schedules and travel time needs.
Program
Based on the acclaimed Rock Camp for Girls summer camp model, each Music Club session will begin with a guided group activity, such as Band Art (making buttons and posters, decorating shirts, other music-related creative design activities).
Students will then have a one-hour Instrument Instruction Workshop focusing on "instrument of the week," with hands-on instruction for each student. Instruments covered over the course of the 8-week semester will include drums, electric bass, electric guitar, keyboards, vocals, and DJ/turntables.
The weekly sessions will conclude with a group music activity, such as a Jam Session / Band Practice, or open mic, giving students additional hands-on time playing instruments as well as the chance to write and play music together as an ensemble.
Music Clubs will have one adult coach who supervises all activities and serves as the group's mentor for the semester. Workshops and classes will be led by the coach and visiting teachers, all of whom are professional women musicians and educators (and many of whom are veteran volunteers from the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls summer camp). Students will set personal and musical goals at the start of each semester, and each semester will end with a concert showcasing their talents, skills and collaborative efforts.
Each Music Club is limited to a maximum of 8 students. Music Club is open to girls with or without previous musical experience, and all instruments are provided.
As in all Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls programs, the values of creativity, leadership, and collaboration will receive strong emphasis. Students' interests will be a guiding force in selecting instruments to explore and group activities - Music Club belongs to girls!

Do your kids love to create art? Looking for something fun & creative for your kids to do on Martin Luther King Day? Budding artists, ages 10 to 19, can spend their day off from school at Introductory Art Workshops at The Educational Alliance’s Young Artist Program, to try out an art class before committing to a full course – and make an artwork to take home!
