Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls is a non-profit music & mentoring program for girls & women. The summer camp features instrument instruction, workshops, songwriting, band practice, and a showcase concert.

Kids in grades 5-12 : RestoreMyClimate.org video contest


RestoreMyClimate.org is a video contest presented by the Citizens’ Climate Education Corp [+] that invites young people in Grades 5-12 to create compelling videos that educate peers, family and community about real solutions to climate change.
Please note these important dates:
The contest opens May 1st
The deadline for entering the contest is May 30th
The deadline for uploading videos is June 7th, 2014

Plan and create an informative video which includes one or both of the following messages:

The world’s top climate scientists confirm that we can restore the climate of the 1980s by 2070. It won’t require a miracle or big sacrifices, just the will and policies to do it. Hope videos should tell us why YOU believe that we CAN solve the climate change issue.

America’s history shows we are capable of coming together and achieving remarkable things when faced with great threats and challenges. Action videos should educate your peers, family and community about what America can do to restore the climate of the 1980s by 2070.

Prizes can be awarded to individuals, groups, classrooms or schools.

The 1st Place Winner will be awarded a trip for one youth (+1 guardian) to Washington, D.C. in June to join their state’s delegation for the 5th Annual Citizens’ Climate Lobby Conference. Alternatively, the 1st place winner may accept a $1,500 grant to be spent on climate education and/or action projects in their school or community.

AGES: The contest is open to U.S. residents who are ages 10 to 17 on or before June 1, 2014. Videos must be created and produced by individuals who meet these criteria.
COPPA: If you are under 13, the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 requires that in order to enter your video in the contest, we’ll need your parent or guardian to send in a parental consent form (PDF) along with your video.
Groups: This video contest would make an excellent immersive learning project for your middle or high school class. If you are a teacher wishing to upload a video on behalf of your students, you must first obtain and submit parental consent forms (PDF) for all students whose names or images appear in the video.

Winners will be announced to the public on this website on or around June 11th, 2014. The First Prize Winner will be notified by 5:00 PM (ET) on June 9th, 2014. Winners will be notified via email.
Videos must be 60-240 seconds long and meet contest technical guidelines.
All videos will be judged by a panel based on:
  1. Creativity & originality (Don’t forget to have fun!)
  2. Content accuracy (Need help? See our resources page)
  3. Following contest rules & theme
  4. Video quality
  5. Overall presentation
*Note about class prizes: Winning videos submitted as part of a school project are encouraged! In the event that a classroom or school is awarded 1st prize, the sponsoring classroom or educator is asked to select one student who would represent the group in Washington.
**Prizes are selected and purchased by individual donors and supporters of the International Citizens’ Climate Lobby.

2014 Baruch Summer Leadership Academy - Application due May 2

Explore New York City

The Academy takes place at Baruch College, a thriving, internationally ranked institution, located in the heart of New York City, midtown Manhattan. Academy students experience college as they have access to Baruch College’s state-of-the-art campus including the college’s library system and athletic facilities. The Academy takes students on relevant field trips throughout New York City, allowing them to explore their career field of choice and meet with successful industry insiders. Students at the Academy are able to experience the unique culture and customs of New York City, an international hub for finance, fashion, business, and the arts.

Discover Your Passions

Each specialized program at the Academy is specifically designed to prepare high school students for successful careers in a pre-professional study track of their choice. The 2014 Academy offers the following five Programs:

Each track at the Baruch Leadership Academy involves intensive classroom workshops and lectures from distinguished university professors and accomplished professionals. Academy students travel to fieldtrips throughout New York City where they can connect the theories that they learn in the classroom to practice in professional settings.

Prepare for the College Admissions Process

Baruch Summer Leadership Academy students are at an advantage because they are able to develop their passions in an environment that fosters academic enrichment, cultural stimulation, and real world experience. Students receive intensive college preparation that truly gives them the edge that they need to get into America’s top colleges. Rising 10th grade students at the Academy receive daily PSAT preparation, while rising 11th and 12th grade students experience daily SAT preparation. Test preparation courses feature content in critical reading, mathematics, as well as writing sections of the exams.

Daily Schedule

Baruch Summer Leadership takes places from Monday through Friday from 9AM – 4PM. On Monday through Thursday students follow the following schedule:

The Academy reserves Fridays for field trip exploration throughout New York City. During the 2013 Baruch Summer Leadership Academy, students visited landmarks such as Wall Street, Times Square, and Grand Central in addition to various museums, corporations, law firms, businesses, colleges, and professional schools throughout Manhattan.


Admissions

The application for the 2014 Baruch Summer Leadership Academy consists of a high school transcript, two letters of recommendation, an online application. International students must also submit financial support documentation for visa purposes. Competitive applications will be evaluated on a rolling basis beginning in January 2014.

LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE

The fourth annual New York University College Access Leadership Institute (NYU CALI) is designed to demystify the often daunting college admissions process.
This program will include workshops and small group sessions on a variety of topics:
  • college admissions
  • college entrance test preparation
  • essay and resume writing
  • interviewing and presentation skills
  • financial aid literacy
Program graduates will be certified College Access Ambassadors and will be required to act as mentors and advisers in their respective high schools by conducting their very own college application workshop.
Successful applicants to the NYU CALI program come from underrepresented communities and are academically strong high school students from the New York metro/tri-state area. They also demonstrate exceptional leadership abilities within their schools and communities. If selected, students are awarded a full scholarship to the institute, and they are only expected to cover travel expenses to and from the NYU campus.
Space in NYU CALI is limited, so please submit your application as soon as possible! 
The application deadline has been extended to April 18.
